hey all. im having problems with leaking carbs and am wondering if a rebuild is in the question. gas will leak past the carbs and out the airbox drain tube. the bike only has 17000km on it. would a carb rebuild be the first place to start? and if so, is there any place to look for a good deal on a kit? thnks

I am no expert on carbs but have done a lot of reading here. I believe the petcock position is the first thing to check, see if it is in primce and the second is the float height. If it leaks when in prime then your float needle is not closing off correctly.

it leaks when in "ON" position. i am assuming all other positions as well but would rather not try. and it has only happened when the bike was sprayed with a hose.

Drain the floatbowls into a clean container that allows you to see the contents.  Set the petcock to PRIme, and tap the floatbowls with the butt end of a screwdriver.  This will hopefully flush out any debris that is keeping the float needle open.

With the drains open, switch the petcock back to ON, and see if gas is still draining out.  It may take a minute for the gas to stop draining, but if it does not, then I would suspect a faulty petcock vacuum diaphragm.

If it stops draining with the petcock in ON, but still leaks after that, you may need to remove the floatbowls to clean in there.  Do not use carb cleaner as it will destroy the rubber parts that are inside the carbs.  You may need to remove the carbs to remove the floatbowls.

With the floatbowls off, then you can inspect the float needles to see if they are notched.  I run my fingernail gently down the rubber tip to feel if it hangs up on the seat area.  If it does, it's notched and needs to be replaced.
