Whatever you do, do NOT get those LED bulbs at auto parts stores...  they only throw light in one direction, so when the bulb it on, there's very little light output.

There are bulbs out there that throw light in every direction, including backwards towards the reflectors... I never tried those, but in theory should work out ok.

thers 2 options ive found on ebay, one for about $65 and one for about $110, they both have integrated turn signals as well. along with flush mount turn signals in the back, that might be good. if anyone has any experience with these lights, let us know if the brake light is bright enough! the one i know is dot approved but i'd still like to know.

thank you sir  :) good thing you posted those because i bought that exact same one you bought about 10 minutes ago. hopefully all works well. if the brake light isnt bright enough, im considering getting an auxiliary led strip to light up as well.

No problemo, although the tail light is fine at night, I'm actually planning on making auxiliary brake lights from some Luxeon K2 LED emitters (I've got a load of them).  I set up a circuit that flashed quickly when the brakes were activated and then went high-intensity, but the heat output was a bit too much (they are being driven at 1 amp, so 5 watts).  I need to find some heatsinks so that the emitters don't burn-up in 90F+ weather.
