We talked about it for a while but we finally got the weather to cooperate for a Baltimore, MD to Bedford County, PA ride.  Unfortunately Kay, Victor (ver4) and I were the only ones that could make it on such short notice.  Hopefully we'll get some more people along next time!

Getting ready to hit the road.  We did a mixture of scenic byways and interstates.

We stopped at Sidling Hill on I-68 to take a closer look at the split dynamited though the top of the mountain.  It is a site to behold.  There is a great view of the valley below too.

We also stopped at Rocky Gap on I-68 to check out the lake and aviary.

My house is on the reservoir that provides Cumberland, MD's water.  It was built by my grandfather in the 1940's as a one room fishing cabin and has been added onto over the years.

I broke out my GS's for our ride around Bedford County.  We rode through Buchanan Forest.

The safest way to go on a playground

Some friends of mine just moved into a really old farmhouse so we stopped to check it out.  There was a crazy looking bug on the porch and Victor made a new 4 legged friend.

This trip also lined up with a very cool annual event.  364 days a year this is just an average barn but once a year all the hay is cleared out to make room for an all night jam session known as "The Silo Sessions."  This started as a small event 6 years ago and has grown tremendously just by word of mouth.  There were some musicians from Nashville this year.  The 14 hours of digital audio recorded this year will take a month to mix and master.  Music, food, beer....  What more could you want???  Check out the custom ring on the fire pit.

After a long day of riding, Kay crashes by the fire place.

I love having a porch full of bikes!

Loaded up and ready to return to Baltimore.  Unfortunately, Kay's bike developed an oil leak on this trip so she got to ride my old reliable '89 GS back.  We took PA Route 30 on the return trip, it has some nice twisties.  We had to pull over a couple of times to let traffic get ahead of us so we could take the turns at a fun speed.

That's cool you took rte 30, if you followed it past Bedford and into Pittsburgh it runs 2 blocks away from my house.

That bug is terrifying as well.

I know what the "bug" is.

Hickory Horned Devil

Hickory Horned Devil

"This caterpillar is the larva of the Royal Walnut Moth, also known as the Regal Moth. The larva is not one for a timid person to suddenly discover. It has a scary, frightful appearance resembling a small dragon with up to five pairs of long, curving hornlike structures over the back of its thorax with the rest of the body covered with shorter spikes. The body color ranges from deep blue-green to tan with orange spikes tipped with black. Shorter spikes are black. Though very ferocious appearing, it is quite harmless to handle. They are enormous in size, being five to six inches long and nearly 3/4-inch in diameter. They feed for a period of 37 to 42 days on the leaves of hickory, walnut, butternut, pecan, ash, lilac, persimmon, sycamore, sumac and sweet gum. Larvae mature in late summer, wandering around searching for a place to burrow underground to pupate. Overwintering occurs in the pupal stage. The moth has a wingspan of five to six inches and is seen in midsummer. It has a long body covered with orange yellow hair. The forewings are gray with orange veins and yellow spots. The hindwings are primarily orange with scattered yellow patches."

Maybe I should become an entomologist instead of a herpetologist.   For those interested in scientific names, here it is: Citheronia regalis

Here's a picture in its adult form:

I have way more scenic pictures, but I don't want to post 30 some odd pictures onto this site, so I've selected some of my favorites.

Kay standing next to the bikes.

Jessie taking a picture.

On the damn dam.

Still on the dam and Kay looking over.

Monkey?

Killer caterpillar, which is actually quite harmless.

I was trying something out with my camera, does anybody notice what is wrong with this picture?

On those days when life is a little too much and nothing seems to be going right, I pause for a moment to ponder the wise last words of my grandfather:  "I wonder where the mother bear is?"
