Hi all GS500 and moto savy people,

Only my first real post and i am asking a question. HOW RUDE of me so apologies to all dedicated forum junkies.

Long story short, i was recently taken out by a driver who thought it was an excellent idea to try and drive through that bright shining light coming towards him at night >:(
leaving my bike and my wrist broken. Seriously, i went and bought a lottery ticket after as apart from a week of pain and having no use of my right hand for a while i came out of a collision with a car pretty good.
The question is this though;
What are some things to look for when rebuilding my bike, It is a 1992 GS500E and suffered the following;

Headlight and housing - Gone
tacho speedo and its housing- gone
clutch lever snapped cable stretched

Will there be a possibilty of damage to the electircal system other than blown fuses?
Would the action of having the clutch cable pulled hard(stretched done any damage to the gear box ?

Surprisingly the front forks are ok as they have avoided direct contact with the car
The tank has been reshaped into a mould of my inner thigh but luckily missed the important equipment.
Any help would be appreciated.
Love this site by the way although i think most of you guys are well and truly asleep when we are on.
Cheers
J

What part of your bike did the car actually hit? If you say it missed your forks, that leaves me to assume they hit your frame/engine somehow, which would be unfortunate.

I can't imagine there being anything wrong with your wiring harness unless parts got pulled so far that some of the wires would've actually ripped or some connectors got broken, but that's fixable. You can put just about any headlight on there. Easiest would be to find another GS speedo, but there are a couple digital replacements that people have put on their bikes that seem nice. Levers always snap when a bike falls over, but they're not too expensive to replace.

If you need help with fixing anything random, I'd check out www.customfighters.com, they can help you replace just about anything.

Good luck with it.

Thanks tt,

That site was cool.
I collided with the front left side of the car and my front wheel went into the wheel hub/ tyre of the car, which sent me into an endo as i was hard on the brakes but had washed off some speed from 60km/h, but the instruments, my wrist and headlights copped a fair whack. Have had the forks off and was surprised to find they are still straight. The frame has suffered no damage from what i can tell so far and the only damage was to the side cover(superficial) of the engine.
I was thinking about putting harder springs in the front end so have had a chance to do that, and used a heavier fork oil to improve the front end suspension.
Just really concerned about the internals of the gear box and the electrical system. Hvae found most of the parts and waiting for new headlight to complete the electrical system before i go any further with it.
happy riding everyone. will be back out there eventually. :)

Pulling the clutch cable won't damage the gear box. If the actuating arm inside the sprocket cover looks OK, just get a new cable and adjust everything as per the manual. Electricals should be fine, unless a wire has been broken or shorted.

pics coming soon as soon as i work out how.
thanks mole, by the way i noticed your from byron. i grew up in bangalow/ goonellabah, been in sydney for 15years and still homesick.
i notice the roads are getting slightly better up home each time i return, a few less potholes anyway.
