so the wifey and i finally bought a house and now we moved across the river to nj. i just did my car inspection this morning, nice and easy; i was hoping for the same with my gs. but apparently not. of all the things i thought they'd tell me i was gonna fail i would have NEVER guessed this. you're all gonna love this, the shield on my helmet needs to be clear! wtf?!

i don't know the laws in nj, so i didn't argue, but wow seriously?!

so yea, i rode back home and changed my helmet shield to the clear one, rode back to the dmv and the inspector just passed me there. only thing they checked was my turn signals and my lights & highbeam. maybe they felt bad that i had to go home?  :dunno_white:

anyhow, any nj folk wanna shed some light?

cheers,

Yea ... we dont like people from jersey.
And yes it applies even if we are from and in jersey currently.

If you had the sense to move, you're supposed to move out of jersey, not into jersey.

Clear sheild is required so you can see your way out of jersey.

Of course the chemical cloud hanging over there works better than a tinted visor. That cloud when it reaches Oklahoma will spawn a category 25 hurricane with toxic chemical twist that will destroy everything ... and you dont want to be in jersey when that happens, cos then you'd be blamed for it.

The only question is ... will the toxic cloud form CA reach that OK tornado alley or will NJ cloud. If they both reach at the same time ... we will have a second China Cylindrome. That is where toxic chemicals form china are packed into cylinders and dropped in the tornado. We dont want that ... you must leave Jersey ... now.

Cool.

Yeah, that's the only thing I got out of that post too. Who moves TO Jersey?? I can't imagine coming out of my house and thinking "Hey, it doesn't smell enough here, I'm moving to Jersey"

I enjoy shops that just make sure your lights turn on and there are no explosives taped to your bike(aside from the gas tank). Not that I have a problem with keeping my bike in good shape, and I understand some people need someone else to look their bike over because they wouldn't know a toasted brake pad if it smacked them in the face, but I don't need some shop telling me my tires are too worn and I need a new chain just so they can stick the cash in their pocket. That's the only reason my wife's moped is cool, it doesn't need inspected. It can look as ratty and wobble as much as it wants. As long as the engine starts, you're good to go.

Jersey is the best state and yeah we have some of the dumbest laws ever at the DMV.  I can't remember if i had a tinted sheild on or not when i went to inspection but alot of what you can fail for at the DMV is completely at the discretion of who is working since none of them follow the set of guidelines.  One person will pass for tinted shields and another will fail you for it.  It is all the luck of who is working when you show up.

Also i love how the DMV follows a different set of laws from what the Police Officers actually enforce.

Welcome to Jersey by the way.  Where did you move to?

yea yea, i know i know. but if you look at real estate in ny (brooklyn at least) it's painfully expensive. so the price was right and the commute isn't *that* bad into manhattan (where i work).

bassmechanicsz, i'm now in nutley. quiet town. a little too quiet sometimes. well, at least for us since we're coming from brooklyn hehehehe.

What's the problem with Jersey?  I've been to north Jersey and it's pretty crappy (from what I can remember), but south Jersey is beautiful.  I have family that lives in Franklinville.

the problem with jersey is north jersey and the nj government. South jersey and even middle jersey can be real nice, if you can avoid entanglement with the NJ government.

@drin - could you not just clean your faceshield?? something like: spit, wipe, dry, good to go, kind of thing?  ;)

anyways, good luck in NJ - I am sure you're gonna like it. And I totally understand your move - housing prices here in NYC are ridiculous even during the recession.
take care and have fun.

PS. Be careful on the highways - it is prohibited to continuously drive in the left lane... at least on some of the highways. I've seen those signs few times, and my father's boss almost went to jail for not obeying this law. Crazy... and not.
cheers

Well drin I would say welcome to NJ but you never did anything bad to me so I won't wish that on you.

I had a similar experience getting my bike inspected. I had a tinted visor but they let me go and failed me on not having reflective stickers on my HELMET! I was like WTF! I had previously had my bike inspected in California and by the military at FT Campbell, KY and Ft Bragg, NC and never even heard of this absurd law. Luckily there was a Stealership about 2 miles away and after 10 or 15$ for the stickers and putting that "CRAP!" on my nice helmet I was able to pass the reinspection. PITA! I think they no longer do this but I go to the Stealership and pay the 20$ for inspection to bypass the aggravation.

I believe the reflective stickers are still a requirement for inspection or atleast still were last year.  I put the stickers on my helmet really loose and made sure to keep the corners from actually sticking so they could be easily removed.

Drin - I lived in Belleville for a year while i was going to college in Newark.  It is a nice little quiet town but if you ever need some close excitement you can always go into Newark right there.

reflective stickers too?! wtf?!

now seriously, what about the guys that just wear the skull cap helmets? there's no wind shield and they're usually black with no reflective stickers.

these laws still boggle my mind.  :dunno_white:

Alot of the bikers that have the skull helmets have second helmets that they keep just to pass inspection and let sit in their garage.  I believe it is 3 2sq.in. patches of reflective material on your helmet.  One on the rear and then one on each side.  They were $2 for me at my local dealer and if you walk in to any dealer and ask for the reflectors to pass inspection they will know exactly what you are looking for.  But if they only failed you for a tinted shield and that is written on the paper they gave you when you failed you can probably go back with just the clear sheild and hope they only look for that to pass you for inspection.

Technically it is illegal to drive in the left lane on any road in NJ and i believe other states have this law also but it isn't posted on most roads and most of the time a cop won't bother you for it. A cop won't pull you over for driving in the left lane unless you are a danger by going to slow or to fast or it is just late at night and they are looking for something to do.

some highways in Texas have signs that say left lane for passing only.

Nobody actually pays attention to them and I have never heard of anyone getting a ticket for not following it.
