today opened up the side case on my 89GS to have a look at clutch cable lifting mechanism,I noticed that the master link of chain was broken and found it split in half. How to make out if the chain is o'ring or non o'ring type. The sprocket is all stock

Would there be any play in driver/ small sprocket( it was easily moving few mm sideways when i yanked it with hand),I also noticed the circlip also moved from its original position.
What may be the cause for this play in sprocket and broken masterlink

Is the master link sold separate ,if so where can I find one........

do anyone of you have masterlink for sale /trade or event he whole chain

You can buy a new master link for less than $4 at any motorcycle shop.. Most likely its O-ring. Take it to the shop w/ you if you arent sure.

what kind of shape is your chain in? if its worn, it may be a good time to go ahead and replace it.  my local dealer has a cheap oring chain, 120 link with master for around $60 iirc.  if chain is in good shape, any bike shop should carry master links in stock.

Its a 520 chain stock. In case you're not aware.
The O ring chains have typically got O rings in the master clips.
Sproket does rock side to side, and the clip also rocks ... BTW what you mean by moved form original location ?
Cool.

It looked as though the sprocket hole may have got oblong but is it possible only the circlip holding the sprocket and spleen worn out.In low gear it makes all sorts of grinding noises and I had made a mistake of running the bike with high chain tension for a long time and I had assumed the chain is a non o'ring type and was using some cheap chain spray from Walmart meant for regular roller chain all this while

Buy a new front sprocket and either a new chain (seems likely given the history) or new master.

If it's o-ring chain, there should be O-rings on the master - at least on the side that hasn't fallen off yet.
