6'3 rider here.  Bought myself a plexistar 2 screen and while I'm happy with the reduced pressure from my neck down I'm getting a big increase in helmet noise - low frequency booming that is driving me mad even with earplugs.

I can tuck behind the screen and good results but I'm not willing to ride like that - don't feel fully in control of the bike.

Have played with the position of the screen with no success.  Am seriously considering attatching a laminar lip to try and push the wind above my helmet.

I'd be interested in anyones opinion on this strategy - don't really want to spend another $130au unless there's a fair chance it might solve my problem.

I've put most of my 370k miles on 6 bikes over 25 years riding behind a Plexi 2 shield without any particular wind noise problem except for the last 5 years when I've  put a smaller Spitfire shield on my current 02 GS for summer use and then put the Plexi 2 back on for winters.

When I first put the Spitfire on the GS I had the same problem as you describe with the line of turbulance off the top of the shield hitting me right in the full face helmet, very annoying indeed.  I couldn't get it high enough to put the wind over my head so I finally lowered it to put the line of turbulance neck high.  Problem solved, it's been quite comfortable that way for summer use and I must have done at least 50k miles with the Spitfire on and set low including a few 400-500 mile days at 70-80 mph indicated on freeways.

I still haven't had any problems with wind noise with the Plexi 2 and I've gone from 6' 2 1/2" down to just under 6' over those 25 years.  I'm using a more curved shaped Plexi 2 I bought for an old CM400 if that makes any difference.  The Plexi 2 sold for the GS500 is flatter in shape.  Could be lowering your Plexi 2 will get the wind out of your face.

Thanks gsjack.  I have tried to angle it back more to reduce the height in an effort to put the wind under my chin but at a certain point the clutch actually hits the screen so I'm limited to how much adjustment I can make.

I was actually thinking about cutting the screen down this morning but that seems pretty drastic.  Think I'd ebay it before I did that.

I should have said Plexi 2 "type" shields in my first post.  Besides the 2 National Cycle Plexi 2 shields I've bought that are currently on my 02 GS and my old 97 GS that JP is riding now I had one Slipstreamer Original which is their equivelant to the Plexi 2 and my original Plexi 2 started life as a Plexi 3.   :icon_lol:

I stopped at the dealer I bought my 81CB400T first bike from about 2 weeks after I got it looking for a shield as my highway pace picked up and they had a big Plexi 3 to fit it.  Shortly after that I got caught in heavy rain on the road after dark and couldn't see and then cut about 2 1/2" off the top of the shield to put it just below eye level like most reccommend.  Six months later I traded the CB400 in on a 82CB750 and put the shield on it.  Got some problems with running hot in traffic and cut inches off the bottom of it.  After 80k miles on the 750 I bought a CM400 and that same shield was hitting the mirrors before I got it raked back like I wanted it so I cut about an inch off the top of the "wings" of the shield to make it fit.

Point is I wouldn't hesitate to cut a Plexi 2 or 3 type shield to fit since they seem to out live bikes for me, just like working with wood.  I used a keyhole saw, coping saw, plane, file, and various grades of sandpaper and the cut edges looked just like the factory edges when I was done.

I drilled two large holes in the bottom of my Spitfire shields also to convert them from 3 point to 4 point mounts making them more rigid.

I have a plexistar 2 on my '01 and a plexi 3 on my Nighthawk250 and have had no problems in normal riding because I am only 5' 10".  I think I can duplicate what you are talking about by sitting high in the saddle with my head up farther which must be normal riding position for someone your height.  I wish I still had the magazine to reference because I remember reading a short product review article about 6-8 months ago for an add on windscreen that mounted to the stock windscreen of one of the Honda touring bikes (Interceptor maybe?) that made the windscreen taller and changed the flow to go over top of the rider.  I assume that is what you are looking to do.  I can't remember the name of the company that made the product but the reviewer said it did it's job well.

Found the product, thanks google!:  http://www.ridermagazine.com/output.cfm?id=2199493

I'm sure you or someone on this board could rig something up like this.

You said you tried tilting it back to lower the height, did you try tilting it forward at all? That might help push some of the air up a little further.

Thanks everyone for the comments.

Had another go at it yesterday with another pair of hands to help.

Managed to drop the screen some and rake it back more so the air flow hits me around neck level.  It is better, but not perfect.  BaltimoreGS that's the product I'm interested in - laminarlip.com is the website, delivered to aust is about $130au.

I'm determined to get it right cause the screen really makes a difference to the late night freeway commutes and I'm expecting it to be even better when winter comes round agian.

Greetings-new here.  Don't own a GS, but I think they're very fine motorcycles and am thinking about a used one for local mountain riding.

Anyway, I currently ride a Kawasaki Vulcan 750 on which I have installed a Plexifairing III.  When I first put it on, I had problems with backpressure and buffeting.  I found out that the key was to situate the fairing so that air pressure was equalized on front and back...mine was set too low...down directly against the headlight shell.  I lifted itabout 1-2" above the light and that solved all those problems...works great now and has for several thousand miles.  No backpressure, no buffeting and lots of wind protection for spring, winter and fall.  For summer, I'll be getting a smaller shield...it gets hot here and the PFIII actually stops the breeze to the point that I'm not receiving enough ventilation.

Just a thought you might want to try.  Good luck!

Ended up getting the lop.  It has pushed the protection bubble up with head winds hitting me on the upper extreme of the helmet.  This has stopped the drumming sound on a closed visor and improved the overall screen protection.

Strangely, visor open and earplugs in produces a high pitch fuzz.  Wind is hitting the extreme edge of open visor causing it to vibrate.  Without earplugs this isn't noticable but I have no idea why.

Overall I'm happy with the results and think there's not much more I could do with the screen.  Any next step to reduce noise will involve a change of helmet - shoie, arai, nolan, something with a good rep and better fit.
