Out browsing CL and ran across a 2006 with 19 miles on it, garage kept.  Probably been sitting around 3 years.

What issues may I run into most likely?

BaltimoreGS

Depending on how it was stored you may face a dead battery, clogged carbs and rust inside the gas tank.

Hi there,
First off, just because the speedo say 19 miles doesn't mean it has only 19 miles.
Is it smashed or dinged or dented?
If so, it could have been crashed ad then they REPLACED the speedo, so beware.
I'd look it over VERY carefully and inspect everything.
If it is truly a bike with so few miles, everything should be pristene, including the engine oil, the tires, treads, chain, no flung chain lube all over, etc.
Are there pics of it on Craigslist you can point us to?
What do they want for it?
Check the title, too.
Is it a valid, non-salvage title?
Lots of Q's to ask and lots to check.
Good luck,

Yeah, if it really has 16 miles it should be in perfect shape. The other option, which is still perfectly acceptable is a bike in good shape with some scratches/dents in the tank, slightly bend handlebar, scuff on the muffler, all meaning some guy probably bought the bike for his wife, she tried to learn to ride it, dropped it once or twice, and just gave up. Even if someone was rough on it I can't imagine the bike having any real problems with that many miles.

Other problems, like people said are the battery being dead, carbs being clogged, tank rust(although with 16 miles the tank should still be just about full), but all of that can be taken care of in a weekend, so it sounds like a good deal to me!

There's not too many common problems with GS500s, they're pretty durable as far as bikes go.

They want $2600 and no pictures on CL.  They said it was never ridden.  I e-mailed them to see if it was still available. They did say they were selling, because they were moving and had to get rid of it. Sounds too good to not at least check out, and see what the story is.  I'll keep ya posted!

It's got 19 miles on it and it was never ridden? What they do, push it around for exercise?  :icon_mrgreen:

Check out the side walls on the tires. Look for cracks.

Could also be a bike someone laid down taking a test drive at a dealership.

It could also be a scam.
Sounds very fishy to me -- no pix, alleged low miles.
You'd think they want people to see it if it's so great.
I'd keep looking.
Good luck,

Thanks everyone!

I went and picked it up yesterday. The guy had bought the bike for his wife one Christmas, and she felt it was too big for her to handle. It sat in their dining room, because they didn't have room in their outside storage area for his Harley and the GS. It is showroom perfect, except for the dead battery. The wife wouldn't let him start it periodically, given the location of storage.   :)   Battery is dead, but tires are good(no dry rot) and no rust in the gas tank.

Awesome! lets see some pictures!

I'd definitely replace the gas, and once you get the new battery in fire it up and see how it runs. It may need the carbs pulled and cleaned if it's runny goofy, but that's not a hard project.

Just replaced the sparkplug in my snowblower before another blizzard hits.

Had the bike out, and took a few pics. Now that I have the snowblower fixed, I can work on getting her back in shape! I still have a couple of months before my MSF class, so I'm taking my time.

Hei, very nice!!! :D

Congrats!!

It also seems that they have modified that seat... I suppose, as said,  previous owner is too short for gs... Maybe it is good for you, but there is possibility that you will need a little more leg space.

Anyway, ii is a new great bike dude... :thumb:

lol...never even noticed the seat.  I'm only 5'7", so no problemo.
