Its on a savage which has a all steel rear fender with a massive brace underneath it, so its built to take a ton of load.

A pair of those would fit nice ...

Anyway just posting an idea ...

The question though, do I put it on this beige bike after matching it to the body color, or in the original military green complete with the writing etc.

Cool.

Hmm... I was just looking at a bike with some of these a day or two ago. It was an early 90's gsxr 750 that the guy took a tumble on in winter, so he took most of the front fairing off, mounted some of those on the sides of the tail, and also had a smaller box on top of where the back seat would've been, and painted the whole thing flat green. I'll see if I can find the thread when I get home so you can see what it would look like all painted the same color.

Nevermind, I'm completely bored at work so I just found it now instead of later. There's a lot more pictures at the link.

My bike was black so I went out and found black cases...well, one anyway, then painted the other to match:

Of course I never took a picture after the bags were painted...

It's a CX500...they had a transverse V-Twin like Moto Guzzi.

What kind of motor is that?

the motor doesn't need to explain itself, or even identify itself on a bike THAT BADASS !!! ;)

You missed a great thing...it's a bike that even makes you think push rods are AWESOME.  Sorry the car was wrecked, though...

Depending on what you want, that would be a decent bike to start with.  Mine was a Deluxe...that bike is a custom.  Difference being mine had the boxier tank.

Just for anyone who thinks about getting one, though...something to keep in mind:  You need to find a GL500 parts bike (I bought mine for $50).  Reason being:
~Spare motor.  Damn things are easy as hell to rebuild.
~Charging system.  CX500 charging system sucks and stators are $300.  GL500 systems are rock solid and stators are $100. You have to drop the motor the change the stator.
~Money.  The rest of the GL, like seats, plastics, frame, etc will sell for enough to cover most of your investment.

These old bikes will nickel and dime you to death too ... there is one guy on the xs650 list that spent 1000 bucks on his bike and he said nothing was over 25 ... I am literally up in the 6-700's now and its stil lgonna look ugly and like a stock xs ...
Yea however they are cool though.

green on beige.  If you get it on and decide it sucks then you don't have to unpaint...

That is a 50 caliber can, just like wha tI am slapping on a savage.
The 30 caliber can should work well too IMHO ... excellent choice courtesy of the US military ... whoo hooo ...

There is a guy who actually did the same thing locally and it looks sweet.  He left them OD green and the writing on them.  Those things look great on a rat bike with the original air force star on the tank.
GS500E with a bunch of cool stuff!
