Went for a ride with a couple of buddies on Thursday. One on a 650 Vstrom, the other on a XVS 1100. Both had heard me talk about Pace Riding but hadn't seen it in action until this ride. I was ride leader and they followed... Yammy behind me and Vstrom behind him. The Yammy was ridden by a Very Experienced rider who used to Race dirt bikes and who has been riding since before Moses played quarterback for Jerusalem.

He couldn't keep up with me. He tried following my lines and couldn't keep up. He was cutting corners and could barely keep up.

His comment on my Pace Riding was... you were smooth - and - that was loads faster than what I thought when you explained pace riding.

Anyway. here's the vid. Twisties galore all done riding the pace...

Enjoy...

Greg: It's called Clementine by Megan Washington. There's two clips of it on youtube... This one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LkrtYRxGyuo (my fav) and this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nmEwHQpcSnA

Josh: The idea of Pace Riding is that you ride withOUT using your brakes. Using correct gear choices and engine braking you set your corner speed early and accelerate out (slow in fast out). While the aim is to NOT use your brakes you still can, in which case ALL braking must be done BEFORE the corner. Lightly feather touching your brakes while cornering is considered "blowing the corner".

By setting your speed early you have more time to see any obstacles - like 5.40 in the vid when I avoid the gravel on the road, come off the throttle as my line was all stuffed up and still make the corner smoothly. Plus, you also have more traction left for cornering instead of using some for braking.

In hit the brakes at the corner at around 1.10 in as it took me by surprise. Otherwise I don't need to use the brakes for the rest of the run. And it was mostly done in 3rd and 4th gear.

Not everyone likes riding this way. The guy on the VStrom likes coming into corners Hard, heavy on the brakes. I find, pace riding Forces me to be a better judge of the road and corners et al. PLus, to me, it's more fun and challenging than using brakes to make all speed adjustments. Try it, it takes a knack to get right. But I think makes for a better rider who is more in control of the bike than just a passenger on a rocket.

PS... thanks Paulcet  :icon_mrgreen:

Actually, you'll also find more info in a thread on the Meet & Greet section of the forum.

What is this "pace riding" you speak of?

http://lmgtfy.com/?q=riding+the+pace

Thanks for that, but if you'd like to browse the results you get from google, you can see the things I got when I searched last night, BEFORE I asked.

There's so few responses on google about pace riding that this very post was the #4 response. The only other motorcycle article was just about pacing yourself in general, and all the rest apply to bicycling riding where you ride in a line and tuck inches from the guys wheel in front of you, which I was really hoping no one on here would do on a motorcycle. Why do people get so touchy about people asking questions on here all the time?

The LMGTFY link doesn't really provide That much more info on it. But I do like the video it pops up of the Tamper Crashers riding the pace on the dragon's tail. And I find it interesting that guy who cuts in, who didn't know what they were doing and was riding more... normal... is the most erratic rider, not smooth like the others or like the camera guy.

I liken it to... imagine you're in a large empty parking lot, is it more fun to just swerve and weave or to accelerate hard then slam on the brake, then accelerate hard again followed by more brake slamming? *I* prefer the swerve and weave. It makes the road a giant slalom - and - is physically less tiring than fighting the bike all the time with accelerating/braking. And strangely, the time seems to go that much quicker when you pace ride / ride the pace.

Jeans On by David Dundas. 1976. I bet that song is older than Most people on this board..... I used to have the intro to Shout To The Top as my ringtone. And six months or so ago this 20 - 21 year old heard my phone and asked me if that was the song. I asked how he knew that song considering radios don't play it - and - it was older than he was. Answer... his parents record/cd collection.

Thanks Nathan. Give the technique a try. I think you'll find it challenging and enjoyable.

I wasn't trying to offend, it just comes naturally to me I guess.  I always hit Google when I don't understand what someone posts, worded like everyone knows what they are talking about (Micheal assumes we all knew what he was talking about, maybe because of the stickys in the meet & greet forum).  I'm sure I'm not the only one, however.  LMGTFY.com wouldn't exist if it was just me or this forum.

Interestingly, if you hit "I'm feeling lucky" when searching "pace riding" you will get Nick Ienatsch's article.  Maybe it wasn't there just a day ago?  I know Google's page ranking is dynamic...  Could the recent searches by way of GSTwins have changed the search results?

O.C.D.

Damn you people who can still ride and not be in snow!!! j/k.  That was a great video, thank you for sharing with us.  Looks like if I ever get on the other side of the pond I need to rent a bike and just "pace" myself.  Loved it!
