Aust Standards - 5 tick sticker changes

I've noticed some new helmets no longer have the 5 ticks sticker on the back but they have a different sticker that claims they pass AS/NZS 1698:2006

I found out that the 5 ticks isn't the Australian Standards logo, its SAI Global (a testing companies) trademark and that the rules are now now changing and no longer do helmet manufacturers have to have their helmet tested by SAI Global to get certification, hence the new stickers.

Be aware, if you get one of these new helmets and go to a track day, un-educated scrutineers may reject your application to race.

I'll try to find more info and a link to confirm these new changes.

I took the liberty of copying that pic and threw it up on another forum (two wheels forum), when I get some info I'll pass it on here. It's not just scrutineers you'd have to worry about, a copper is likely to give you a ticket for it.

The info I received was that there are 7 companies that can issue certification stickers, as long as the helmet has the sticker saying that it complies to as/nzs you'll be right.

Wow reading forums on the net, there seems to be alot of confusion over the sticker with many thinking the 5 ticks is a government label not a companies trade mark.

Really what is needed is a government apporval sticker.

This is interesting. I also asked my sister who is a police officer to look into it(she rides bikes too). Ill let you know what I find out.

I just purchased a Shark RSI also with the same sticker. It better be legal cause I had to buy another helmet due to my Shoei not having the sticker on it.

How do you find your Shark helmet Galahs?

Hey Guys,

I know for a fact that helmets must have either:

Snell DOT sticker on it, and/or the 5 tick AS standard.

One of either is legal. Had the argument with a officer the other day, when he tried to book me for no AS sticker on my KBC.

I am pretty sure the Snell DOT thing is the American standards? I don't think it has anything to do with Australia. My Shoei helmet is DOT Snell certified but is classed as illegal as it has no AS1698 sticker on it.

All helmets in Australia need to have an Australian/NZ 1698 sticker attached to your helmet. If it does not you can be booked for not actually wearing a helmet which is 3 demerit points and $320 fine. I also think this can affect your insurance claim if you crash.

I think a few companies are doing the tests now hence the different stickers you can get on newer helmets.

Did you end up getting booked or did you get away with it? If you did I would say you were very lucky.

ok snell and dot are American and European and a helmet must have Australian Standards sticker to be worn on our roads, race tracks look for snell and dot

there is no standard AS sticker any more and most company's/importer's have their own

as long as the helmet has been tested and has a sticker your good to go

You don't need a sticker on the outside of the helmet, only a tag sewn to the lining of the helmet.

Depends on the state. The standard only requires the lining tag for it to be standards compliant, but a couple of states I believe specify that it must also have the sticker to be legal.

That's just revenue raising and harassment of motorcyclists.

Well if I am doing the right thing I expect everyone else too be. I think it is a good thing.

bubba zanetti

How is harrassment of motorcyclists for things like stickers on helmets, fender eliminators, or a slightly loud pipe, and licence 'checks' a good thing?

I just think your use of the word harassment is a bit dramatic is all. He never mentioned loud pipes or fender eliminators. It is just a few simple roadside checks according to XLAR8.

If you are doing the right thing you have nothing to worry about do you if you do get pulled over. 5 minutes while they check you over and you will be on your way.

Five minutes??? you are kidding aren't you? Most cops I've dealt with will keep you there for as long as they can.

I once got breathoed, then the car saerched, me and the missus searched, licence checked twice, an attempt at defecting the car, then drug tested all on the one stop.

I did nothing wrong, I didn't speed, be abusive. He just didn't like the look of my car, one very battered kingswood at the time. Well fricking sorry for not having an BMW or Merc >:(

It wasn't the plasma tvs on the back seat that had them suspicious?  :icon_lol:

I have never been kept longer than 5 mins on the bike when pulled over.
