OK I happened to just by accident watch all the harry potters that have been out including the one from summer 09 (Half blood prince).

Then I started on the lord of the rings and am on the last one. The weird thing is, I the LOTR series (made starting in 2001) seems to fit in where Half blood prince (made in 2009) left off.

Is that my imagination or does any one else here care to break their shell, expose their geek roots and confirm/deny/argue it.

You forgot spectacles and pocket protector, and they are all the same device, a 3 cm X 5 cm square (BTW geeks know metric system better than inch).

I didn't forget them, they just seemed a little too obvious. My wife loves both of those movies, so I've seen all 15 harry potters so far, and all 45 hours of lord of the rings. They're well done movies, just not my thing, but I do my best to not pick on them because she really likes them.

I did the same thing recently. I wanted to see what all the fuss was about so I finally watched the 3 original star wars movies last summer. Again not my thing, but I was tired of not getting references in other movies and tv shows.

And BTW not afraid to say I love StarWars, StarTrek, LOTR, Harry Potter, BSG and anything else that is SCIFI/Fantasy that is done well.

My interest if the LOTR comes from reading "the Hobbit" series as a kid. It is very rare that you can do a trilogy in such a short time with all of the actors staying the same age so I think it was unusually good for that reason and more!

LOTR is based on a ring which is hard to destroy. Kids = hobbits lets say.

Anyway the next 2 are comming soon on HP, LOTR is pretty much done.

Thanks for expounding now I get it. Yeah I think Harry and friends are getting a little too old to keep the facade going much longer. And using Batman as an example there are few movies that work when the main character(s) actors change.

Harry potter is one of those that seems to center on a theme. He speaks to snakes and there is a huge snake in it ...

They create some BS in the begining and later there is more BS based on that BS.
Sorta like Star trek, where they introduce the new guy with a lot of fanfare. Of course we know the guy's gonna get killed.
LOTR was a smooth 14 hour movie. Literally 1 movie with a single narrative and a great cast too Ian McKlennan and all the rest super cool.

Of course in HP they had to change dumbledore after the third cos the guy died, and they subbed in a identical twin.

Oh God if I hear one more thing about Harry Potter I'm going to get vilolentl ILLL! You see I get to do security for out New Harry Potter land. Aren't I such a fortunate one. I had one post where I had to watch them trear krap out of dureling dragons and make sure Potterites don't steal trem from here and sell them. For Universal this will be a make or break but from the things I've saw (I'd have to kill you if I told you) it will bring a much needed breathe back into central Flroida.

Yay Neard Tourons. People have been fillling out apps for months now.

I really don't think it's fair to compare any of the modern "folk lore" authors to Tolkien. IMO, he's the origianl and everyone else seems to be copying. That being said, some of them have some taste and have done quite well for themselves. I didn't really get into the Harry Potter series but am a HUGE Tolkien fan. So I was stoked when the movies came out. I was worried they would destroy the movies and they would be completely different from the books. However, I must say that I think they did a pretty good job with them. Naturally some things were left out but in the grand scheme of the story they weren't really neccessary. (Tom Bombadill anyone? ) If you want to REALLY enjoy the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, you should read the books. Another author that I like that is similar is Robert Jordan. He writes The Wheel of Time series. I haven't read them in awhile and there seems to be more out now than when I was last avidly reading them. I wonder how a big screen version of that would go?    I am done posting for now, I shall bring out my pipe and toke on some good ole Shire Tabac leaf and leave you to ponder my statements.

No no no no no no ... I aint reading no books. IMHO, the guy saw the movie and wrote the book, sorry, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.
BTW books are more interesting to some people cos they are left to imagine themselves what each of the characters and what not look like as well as the other stuff like buildings, the towers, the beasts etc etc ... Movies with cool effects take care of that IMHO ... less to imagine and more to experience.

Bloody hell, when the missile in avatar flew under the tree branch and hit the ground and the IMAX theater effect made the ground shake, dude I dont think there is a book that can make it ...

I now have to put in a shaker run out of my sub woofer to get the under 20 hz sounds turned into tactile sensation.
Sorta like my own IMAX @ home.
