Ok this all started because i was negleting my bike...  I need to chainge the chain and sprockets... the chain is lose and has no more room to move and the sprockets are warn...

I was riding to my girlfriends work so we could have lunch together as i do most days (its only 10 mins away and i work in a basement so its good to get outside and see the sun) when i was comming the last T intersetion before i got to her work i was decelerating, using heavy engin breaking to do so when i heard a bad grinding  sounds as i was going down in the gears... i engaged the clutch came to a stop and after gving way turned right (i am in australia) starting off again nothing seemed to had broken  but i was defenetly going to do that service on my bike there was no way i was going to put it off anylonger...

After lunch I started the bike and everything was fine untill the first T intersection again... i engaged the clutch went down one gear and then engaged the clutch again and nothing happened... i quickly found neutral and pulled the bike to the side of the road and after pulling the clutch in a few times i new something was wrong... i thought maybe i had snapped the clutch cable so limped the bike back to my GF's work and had a look... the cable looked ok and the leaver was working and returning but it was defenetly missing some tenshion...

Later that day i rode the bike home (that was fun running a few steps and putting it into gear and clutchless shifting... going down in the gears was "fun" and i kissed the bike and said sorry when we got home...

Today (5 days after this happened) it was not rainig and i had enough time after work to actually see what my neglet had done....

Now the only thing i can think that did that was when under heavy engin breaking the chain has leaked over the frount sprocket a little and hit the push rod (#20) and it has snapped... it also did not fall out untill after i had ridden a litte further down the road...

Now i changed the sprocket and chain (also the break pads and fluid) and will  hopfullty pick up a push rod from the dealer tomorrow and have her on the road again. 

Ok so now you have the background of my stupidity  i have a question. What else should i be looking for? ill be going over everything i can again as i want to make shore i didn't forget anything...

Anway i home my stroy helps someone else down the line or maybe brings a smile to someone face... I am off to bed and look forward to reading the replys and flames tomorrow...

well you learned your lesson so you wont do it again.  make sure you can get the pushrod out of the hole in the tranny, a magnet may work

There should be second lever on the righthand side, that lever is used for the front brake.  What the brake does is stops stuff. use it 

I guess it's all relative but when I get on the GS after riding larger displacement bikes I really notice the lack of engine braking power on a GS.

It doesn't have anything to do with displacement. Its got to do with compression,gearing, and other factors. The gs has low compression therefore making it slow down using the engine not as well as say a CBR. Just something to think about.

Good point dauph     I confused ver4 when I first started riding with him because the SV has a lot of engine braking and I use that a lot in my riding style.  He thought he was having trouble seeing the LED brake lights.  I had to mentally tell myself to use the hand brake so he'd get an idea where to brake while learning to ride.  Luckily he's a quick learner so I can go back to my way of riding now

Haha! I know right..like when I ride I tell myself to flash the brake
light so people know I'm stopping. The gs does ok on engine braking, but I don't want to break it. Lol. A Lil break every now and again doesn't hurt.

I was using the front break at the time l was just using engin breaking as well.
I put this on here to 1 punish myself for being lazy and procratinating and 2 to ask if anyone thinks i should be looking at anything else or if there is anything extra i should get at the shop today?

Been through it,man.  Laziness cost me about 200 bucks last year(couldn't get the other half of the push rod out so I had to take the right side cover off to get it out, broke the detent pin for the crank, and new chain and sprockets). Make sure that you are taking care of your chain.

out of topic , wher do u live in australia? im from sydney marrickville ive seen like 20 bloody gs500s on the road... but dnoo the riders :L

They aren't That common. Not where I am.

There is a guy who occasionally comes riding with us who has one. And in the last bunch of months I'd say I've seen three - one the other day I left a piece of paper on with the GSTwin website on it, and the other couple where on the road (One while I was in my cage and the other while I was in the work vehicle). But Suzuki dealers tell me they sell well.

Interestingly, if you go to the Army base in town, pretty well all you see is Yamahas. That's cause just up the road from the base is a Yamaha dealer and he gives the Army Boys a Great Deal on bikes. So you see VMaxs, MT01s, R6s as well as small Virago 250 cruisers. All ridden by guys in Army Greens in and around the base, coming and going, etc.

I know of 4 in my area and i have seen a few about in the city but they are not that common... they are becoming more popular as they can now be ridden by learners as part of LAMS

I don't see how engine braking would cause the clutch pin to break.  I think it just broke, and I'm mildly surprised as the pin merely pushes against the tension of the clutch spring.

As others have said, don't let your chain and sprockets wear out like that.  When you do that you're begging for the chain to break or fall off, jamming the back wheel, causing an accident.  $100 is a lot cheaper than a hospital stay or a funeral.
