Cheap alternative to a carbon fiber exhaust can?

I have a carbon fiber theme goin on with my gs500F, and I'd really like to replace the stock can. However, I'm not looking to spend $400 on Yohsimura pipe, or even $200-300 on a Hindle pipe (like the one in the wiki). I don't see any reason to spend that much on a pipe I want for looks, I know the GS isn't a high HP/TQ bike. I'm planning on getting a Daytona 675 Triple once I'm out of school, and that's a bike I could understand dropping a good amount of money on for an exhaust. I just can't justify an expensive pipe for a bike I don't plan on racing or anything like that.

What I'm wondering is, would it be an issue if I used a CF pipe that's meant for a car? There's tons of coffee can/fart cannon/bumblebee/whateveryouchoosetocallthem ricer muffler on eBay for about $50 shipped. I could have an adapter made up for it to make it connect to the stock mid-pipe.

Something like this is what I'm thinking of:

It's not exactly what I'm looking for, but something of that nature would be best. They're cheap, they have the carbon fiber look that I want, and did I mention that they're cheap? :)

I would obviously jet the carbs appropriately to compensate for the loss of backpressure.

So again, will an automotive muffler cause an issue? Or even worse will my bike sound like a civic spinning 8K rpm's? :P

Let me know what you think, or even better if anyone is running an automotive muffler by chance, if you could post a sound clip that would be great.

Thanks,

-Kyle

there was a guy running a fart can meant for a car on here, and we laughed him off the site :bs:  it is certainly do-able,  but the diameter of most of the ones on ebay may be too big to look good on the gs.  try to get one with a small diameter canister.  also, look into a cheap pipe made for a 4-wheeler, or dirtbike, would be cheaper than model-specific for gs, just have a custom midpipe made by your local welder or muffler shop

The one in that link is 5" around, iirc that's the size of the stock muffler on the gs? I can't even find anything universal and cheap for an ATV or something like that.

How long is the stock can though? If the one in the link is the same diameter but shorted that will look weird.

I havent had a stock can for a long time, bit iirc it was a 4" can, thats what most aftermarket bike cans shoot for afaik. looking at the pic of your bike, in comparison with the 17" rear wheel, it would appear to be around 18 to 20" long.  whats gonna thow the car can off, is its gonna be shorter, and fatter

What about something like this?

It's really tiny but it's for a gsx-r 600, so it would definitely be more reasonable than a ricer muffler.

I bought the pipe on my old bike for cheap.
Make friends with a welder and you're all set.
Check it out here.

I actually have a friend who's a professional welder, so in that aspect I'm already set. Now I need to find a pipe that's in my price range. I'm selling a bunch of extra parts from my car and few parts I have for the GS to hopefully make some spending money (I'm in school and can't even find part time work, so I have to keep spending to a minimum).

I'd love to get a yoshi pipe or something similar if I could find one for around $100, but it's a matter of having the money when the part comes up. I've definitely decided against the ricer can I posted though.

If anyone comes across a great deal on a CF pipe of is selling a pipe, let me know :)

Thanks

If you're not actually looking for performance out of the pipe, and just want the look, maybe you can find a stick on carbon fiber sheet that you can just stick on the exhaust. I'm sure it exists somewhere. The GS is a small bike in general, so when you consider that most stock pipes look huge on 600cc+ bikes, that makes searching for the gs even harder. See if you can find a carbon pipe frmo a bike that someone's dropped. That way even if it has rash near the bottom you can drill out some rivets, cut a couple inches off, and rivet it back together and you'll be in business considering the shorter pipe would fit the size of the GS well.

I figure if I'm going to rejet for the K&N so I can take that restrictor out, I might as well jet it for a pipe too. I just don't want to spend a whole bunch on money on a pipe. I actually thought about wrapping the pipe in a CF sheet, but I think I'll just keep my eyes open for a used/dropped CF pipe.

I LOVE all the ricer can comments...yeah they look a little funny on a bike but people don't say much after they hear them.

kyle_99_gtp

If I could find a ricer can smaller than 5" diameter and longer than 18"  I'd do it. Unfortunately they're all sized for a civic, not a motorcycle.

Bigger the can, the better.  Get as big as you can find.  The volume helps keep the noise mellowed and smooth.  If the giant tips that come on them bother you, have a shop weld the tip from your GS on...it'll be about the same size as the core.

Best sound you can get.

kyle_99_gtp

You wouldn't happen to have a sound clip or anything like that would you?

That's the only one I can find at the moment...I had one on an EX500 that I posted a few years back but the file is no longer there and I can't find it on the transfer to my new PC...and I just got finished formatting my old one lol
