I dropped my bike the other day and needed to buy a new front brake lever as the fall snapped the last one. When I dropped the bike there was gas on the floor from my gas tank. Should this ever happen?
Also the above image I quickly made was a part I found underneath my bike on the floor. Has it come off my bike?

it kind of looks like a brake pad clip.  But I doubt it came off your bike.

also gas "shouldent" come out of the bike when it falls over (maybe a little but not a Puddle)

What color is it, what is it made of, and gas under a fallen bike is common, either from the tank over the top or carbs from the overflow, Both are normal. But you may have air in your brake line. Might want to bleed it.

If you drop the bike on its side, a relatively small amount of gas may end up on the floor when you pick it up. The carb float bowl from the top carb can drain into the airbox while it's tipped over, and then the airbox will drain beneath the bike when it's righted. This would likely only be a few ounces.

I'm not sure what the part might be, and I thought I knew most of them on the GS.

The part is some kind of metal, not aluminium. Its a dark, almost black colour. Its about 4 maybe 5 inches in length. I was sitting on my bike today whilst in the driveway and started to move it around so I could drive off into the street when I heard the cling of my tyre hit something metal. I looked on the floor and found this part. It looks like the two holes in either side once had screws through them.
Any ideas yet?

Also it looks like some kind of oil residue has discoloured the metal so that you see the greens/blues, etc that oil produces.

The tank bracket that holds it to the frame... That is similar but has additional bends at the end and nuts in the bent lips.

Yeah I'd say a tank bracket or maybe one of the shims that they sometimes put between the rubber vibration dampers.

IF that was able to fall off, you might want to look and see what is holding your tank on...

How do I check to see whats holding the tank on ? It dosen't move at all when I try pushing it

Also when I was riding the bike today (this isn't related to the unknown part) my bike sometimes revs really high without me even touching the throttle. Whats causes this? The choke was off.

Ooo. Ooo. (waving arm in the air) Call on me. I know the answer.

Its part of the tail assembly. It is (or was) located under your tail lamp. It is bolted on along with the side rails. The hook holds your toolkit pouch band in the back.

See part #9 in the diagram

Note that if it is the part I mentioned, then the bolts holding it on were also holding up the back part of your rear fender.  If they are both missing, then you have gone from 5 fender mounting bolts to 3. Best check on it.

I was looking at the diagram Joe posted and now I'm wondering just how that part has fallen off. Its bolted onto the side rails yet there is now breakage in the part for it to have come off. The bolts are still on the side rails.

I would say that somebody before you didn't thread the holes properly.

I think it may not have been on the bike bolted to it anyways. In the area where the tool kit would go there are now two power/controllers for the neon lights that shine around the engine. (I just bought this bike only recently) I guess he just left the missing part hanging in there and not attached.

I'm also right in assuming everything is still safe with this part not on my bike?

What does part numer 35 do ? It's an adjuster for something? Is it the rev idle control?

Yep, that's the idle adjust knob.  Twist it IN to increase the RPMs at idle, OUT to decrease.

Once you're used to it, you can find it while sitting at a light without even thinking about it.

Thanks again everyone. I've only just got my GS, it's a 1996 E. So far I love it, I was going to originally buy the 250 rebel but then saw the GS500 for sale at 1500. I obviously bought it as this is the first bike I really wanted. I'll be here often asking questions. So far everything I've wanted to know has been found in the search option. I love it.
