I dont know what was changed but i just took this to my bike to install it and it DOES NOT FIT.  the bike is an 05 gs500f.  this needs to be listed as not fitting F model bikes anyways so no one else ends up having the same problem.

What made you think it would fit when it has a totaly different JIS code from the stock  :dunno_black: Is it listed by the manufacturer/seller as fitting a GS5?

That ES12BS is the sealed battery Buddah used to suggest for the GS500.  He put it on it's side and made some cable changes to accomodate it.  Since then I've found a sealed battery that fits like oem and works great in the GSs:

well that would have been great if that info was put in that thread along with the DONT USE THIS BATTERY if you dont want to spend half a day fitting it.  i just ordered one off ebay thats a sealed battery same dementions as stock. The info in that thread is very misleading.

you cant list a battery as a replacement battery and not tell people that you have to mod stuff to use it.  if thats the case you can use a car battery if you want to cut your stuff up and extnd wires and ect. ect. ect.......

heres the battery i just ordered after taking the other battery back to walmart.

I'm glad you posted this up because I was just about to go to walmart and buy that same battery.  So it doesn't fit even if its put in on its side??

joshr08

as far as i could see there was no way without cutting and splicing that this battery would fit.  I just ordered the one in my last post out of florida off ebay for 59.00 shipped not sure what the one gsjacks costs but the one i got and the one he runs are both 100% sealed.  I do not recommend getting the walmart battery.

I couldn't find the stock battery when I was looking, I ended up picking one up from Sears, I believe it was a 10. It was a bit smaller than stock, and the fluid drain hose connects to the opposite side. Works though. I just put some thicker foam in the box that holds it. I found out that one fit by looking on this site though, so the right info is posted somewhere, just not sure where.

The GS500 (all years and models) comes with a YB10L-B2 battery which is a Yuasa number, the 10L-B2 is the generic part of the number.  It is identical to the YB10L-A2 except the vent hose is on the opposite end, just reroute the vent hose and A2 fits right in.  I used the more available and generally less costly A2 in my GSs for years including some from Walmart.  The last couple Walmart ones were below par I thought so I searched a little over a year ago and found the Scorpion sealed battery and bought one.  Several here have also bought them and it's the been best one I've had.  Riding year around here in NE Ohio is hard on them with all the cold winter starting.  It's current $54 price includes shipping, it was only $50 last year when I bought and it came from the west coast in a few days.

Never thought much of that idea of putting in a 12 AH size battery with the alterations required to fit it just to get a sealed battery so I never tried it.

I just put an 10L-A2 in from Advance Auto Parts and just had to re-route the vent tube a little bit since it's on the opposite side. The battery was about $60.

yep, 10L-A2, I think that's what I bought, however mine is slightly smaller on both sides than the stock battery, not by much though.

That sealed battery sounds like a better deal. Mine is unsealed and I think I paid about $50 for it.

I like the extra capacity of the 12AH battery, so it was worth it to me.  Probably worth the trouble for others as well.

Sorry you were led to believe it was a direct swap.

Why???
I had a 10AH battery at first, and even though it was maintained well, it didn't start the bike as eagerly as the 12AH.

And if the regulator dies (like mine did) the bigger battery will get you farther.

<edit>
It would be a good idea to update the FAQ, maybe pointing to this web page on Pantablo's site: http://pantablo500.tripod.com/id41.html

i use the walmart sealed battery and this is what i did to get mine to work. the batter wont fit into the stock box, unless you turn it on its side and re-route the positive cables. i'll take a picture of what i did when i get the chance =P

edit: looks lie paulcet got the link up before i did. haha then again, i guess my bike is an 89 so the fitment on an 04+ may be different? i dont see why it would, though.
rustbucket on wheels that go vroom vroom and stuff.

joshr08

ok well maybe the links from gsjack and myself should be put into the FAQ as DIRECT SWAP replacement batterys that will fit into the stock location and in the stock position, and for the same price as the walmart (have to move everything around) battery.  oh and my new battery is rated at 14ah IIRC from the stats that are on the webpage for the battery.

Ok, now THAT'S a far better battery.  Fits and has better performance.  AGM is good, too.   Wonder how they get more capacity in the same size....

<edit>
Can't find any specs for 14Ah, but the picture says otherwise:

<edit again>
Perhaps the ES12BS battery is also 10Ah....

Perhaps you have to go to a YB14 battery to truly get more capacity.
