How are stock bar weights attached?

My 07 appears to have stock bar end weights but they are not attached correctly.  I noticed one was loose so I tried tightening the screw head on the end and it just kept spinning.  I took out the screw and low and behold the screw was held in with black silicone.  I am not sure if these are supposed to bolt in (and mine were replaced with undersized screws in which case can someone tell me what the right size is supposed to be) or if they are held in some other way.

Also, where is a good source for grips?

Thanks!

There's a rubber bumper between two plates.  As you tighten the outside screw, it should compress the bumper and make it thicken, holding it against the inside of the bars with friction.

I don't know anything about anything.  Follow suggestions found on the internet at your own risk.

I remember those stock things were a pain. They're like 4 inches long and just jammed in there. It took me a while to get them out.

As far as grips, any online place should have some, like kneedraggers.com or somewhere like that. I need a new pair as well, once I get my bike back together I'm just gonna ride to a dealership and grab a pair I like off the shelf. They're all around $14-15 for a decent enough set. You can get cheap ones on ebay for $5 though.

I went to the hardware store and found the longest screw they had that still fit through the bar end, it was about 5 inches long and bought the bolt and a few more washers. Ordered a few more of the rubber stock bar weight bumpers and got 3 of them mounted with washer between each one instead of the original 1. The single original bumper pulled out on me and came loose all the time. It hasn't come loose since I put the new screw and bumpers over a year ago. I used to have to re-tighten the bar ends once a month with the stock screw and single bumper.

Cool...thanks for the replies.  Where did you pick up the bumpers from?
