ok so i had an oil leak dripping from under my shifter so i took it to a mechanic and he said my shift rod seal was bad so ordered a new one and he replaced it get home and BAM more oil leaking k so i take everything off and put it on the center stand for close to 30 min running and notice its leaking from my starter cavity drain so i decided to do an oil change drained it changed the filter cleaned her up and ran her for about 10 min to check for leaks nothing checked the oil level good so then i took her for a test run 3.5 miles get back one little drip in the same spot(i think from the starter cavity drain) checked the oil level and nothing bone dry  >:( anyone got any ideas or can help i would appreciate it

oh and can you put the filter cap on a wrong way?

jeremy_nash

how did you check the oil level?  put bike on center stand, unscrew dipstick, wipe off and set it back in without screwing it.  maybe when did it wrong the first time, but correctly the second time

first on kick stand then on center stand now after 15 min of being on center stand its starting to fill up.

yeah, you have to give the oil time to drain back outta the top of the engine

An oil change with filter requires a little more than 3 quarts of oil.  You only rode 3.5 miles.  Look for the huge oil trail up and down your street.  If you don't see one the oil is still in the engine.  When you check your oil level always have the bike on the center stand, then check the dipstick WITHOUT SCREWING IT IN.  Actually if you screw the dipstick in to check it you'll think you have more oil than you really have so that's not the problem.

As for the leak by your shifter, it can come from two places.  One is the seal your mechanic replaced, the other is chain oil that coats the inside of the sprocket cover then drips out when the engine gets hot.  Both leaks look the same.  Actually one isn't a leak at all.  It's possible your mechanic took advantage of you and replaced a seal you didn't need.  It wouldn't be the first time that happened.

Let us help you get familiar with your bike so mechanics won't take advantage of you.  Some mechanics will treat you fair and square if they think you know about your bike but they'll rape you if they think your a newb.  Some will treat you well either way but that group is getting smaller and smaller, sad to say.
