To the original poster of this thread.  You will find that money will go alot further for modifying a bike than it will for a car.

Thats what I'm liking about this little project, when I started thinking about a bike I told myself I was going to buy a bike with a budget of $1500. I got such an awesome deal on this that I should be able to do everything I need to, and some of what I want to, within that initial budget. So far I've spent a total of $1040. :)

After I get everything resolved and have it really running well, I think I might buy the dominator dual headlights with a little fairing for it. I'm planning on repairing the tank (keeping it the exact same color, I think its perfect) but fixing where it has bubbled around the fuel cap. I may eventually do the ducati seat with the cover for the rear one, and color match it to the tank. I can do my own paintwork, so I should be able to do that stuff in my budget and have a little knockout of a bike.  :D

I'm really excited about working on her.

With the subframe already cut up you might have a pretty easy time swapping to a ducati seat. The only issue with that is that the newer tanks you usually see ducati seat swaps on are rounded and have an indent for the seat, and the older ones are square, so the ducati seat won't line up as well. The tanks are all direct swaps, so you can always find a used one on on here or on ebay for $100 and just swap the tank too, and you'll end up with a bike that looks 10-15 years newer than it is.

I'm gonna have to buy a car someday when I move out of the city. I had thought about getting an old mercedes or something just for the fun of it to say I had a mercedes, but I think I'm just gonna try to find a really small truck. I don't need a large testosterone filled setup, I just want something with a bed big enough to carry a motorcycle or some drywall. I've got a friend that I think is selling a ford ranger in good shape soon so I'm probably gonna try to pick that up.

As far as the throttle, when you pull the cable out to lube it, make sure the actual throttle spins smoothly around the handlebar too. There could be some friction there too that some sandpaper would fix, but it's most likely the cable.

Homer: just so you don't get worried about them, I haven't been farting in your old boots :D

That's my first bike.  I put a lot of blood and sweat into it.  I'm attached to it, like you are to your Beemer.
Touched a nerve, there, didn't I?  Maybe you understand.
I've turned nearly every bolt and every screw.  There are vivid memories behind everything you can touch on it.
So, yes, I overreacted.
I love it, it's like my girlfriend.  And now you have it.

The front turns in quicker than a normal GS.  Be careful with a 110 front tire.
You're tall, so it's gonna be even quicker.  With your shoulders closer to the triple.
It'll still cruise nice and easy, but hug the tank and keep the revs high and it'll scare you.  Don't slam the throttle closed and stuff the brakes when you're doing it - not yet, anyway - she'll pitch you and laugh.
It has good days and bad days.
It has a personality.  Ride it enough and maybe it'll show you.  It gets tempermental, like an expensive girlfriend.
Some days, it wants to be ridden hard and slapped in the @ss.
Some days, you'll pull the carbs and nothing's in there.  It just wanted you give it some attention.
No, I'm not kidding.

Please take care of it.

Edit:
Those ARE good pictures.  Better than I could have done.
Take a few at the track, so I know she's having a good life.

Homer

By the way, there's a 7/16th bolt in the gastank.  On the left side, in that little recess.
It's from the car my Dad and I rebuilt when I was 16.
It's for good luck.
It's covered with 2 quarts of epoxy fueltank sealant, so don't worry - it's not going anywhere.

If your girlfriend is under 150 lbs, then you can ride two-up on a good road.
Unless she likes sticking her @ss out, to impress guys like Josh08 that don't understand geometry.  In which case, she'll fall off and break the seat.
That's on purpose.

LMAO - I love this thread!  Makes me want to keep bumping it to keep it going and boost my post count!!!!  :woohoo:

It's gotta be even weirder to have the guy who bought your bike on the forum you were always on. I'll have to see if I feel like telling the person who buys my bike next spring about the forum or not. The same thing is going on on the other forum I check out, it's just not hostile.

And I warned you about the tail.  I told you specifically that I don't ride two-up, and never will.  And that the tail wouldn't stand it.
You said it was fine.

I'm just pointing out that you tell him absolutely no two up riding then in another post tell someone else you and your wife ride two up on it just fine.  So make up your mind no two up or yes two up.  I do know geometry and i know that suzuki put the frame supports in there for a reason.  I am a state lic. motorcycle mechanic and if that bike was to come to me to be fixed I would send it back to whereever it came from I wouldn't take the responsibility of that bike even being on my property with the frame being cut like that.  Let alone even hint that two up riding would be remotely close to ok on that setup.

I'll take good care of the bike, don't worry.

Speaking of which, I dumped the gas that was in it and got a brand new tank of mid-grade, then my uncle dropped by and helped me inspect the carbs and set the air/fuel screws and she runs! Well! I can crack the throttle wide open and it revs up nice and quick and then closes again just like it you think it would.

We noticed the plastic lines running fuel from the tank kink really easily if you aren't paying attention when you put it all back together, so I'm going to get some fuel hose that won't collapse. I've got a list of other small stuff I want to sort out growing.

I'm starting to get excited :D

Oh, my girlfriend can enjoy me riding past on it, or get her own bike to ride along with me, I'm don't really want to put someone on that seat, and I feel like I should have some pretty substantial seat time logged in before I think about taking anyone with me anyway. Not having rear pegs installed will be a good way to make me stick to that decision.  8)

tt_four

Yeah, I was wondering how he had anyone on the back, even if they were light in the first place considering it doesn't have any rear pegs. My GS is a solo seater with no rear pegs, and the next bike I get will have the pegs pulled off when I get it home. I used to ride my wife on the back on occasion, but I really have no interest in having a passenger anymore. Aside from the fact that her helmet used to smack mine every time I let off the gas, and just the extra work of having someone on the back kinda takes away from the fun. To be honest though, I'd still prefer to screw the pegs back in and ride her somewhere instead of us both piling in the car.

The reason we have the GS was so she could come riding with my when I had my last bike. It's much easier that way!

Thank you.
Guess it may sound weird to get so attached to it.

The tail - you explained exactly what I was trying to say.  It's built like that on purpose.
It's to keep anyone from pretending they're this guy:

And so you can't do this:

(NSFW, I know.  Yell at me, later.  I'm trying to make a point.)
You CAN however do this:

Or the Ducati seat mod.  In which case, you may have to change your tank, as was mentioned.
I didn't do it, with the sentimental value I mentioned.
I believe that's a CB750 seat, by the way.  There are fiberglass versions on Ebay.  The biggest problem in mounting it is at the tank, the little lip that fits into the recessed bracket at the front.  CB's have a different set-up.
You need something about 8 1/2" wide, and I can't remember how long.  I think 19 inches.  The length is up to you, anyway.
AND, you can fit the battery inside the tail.  Especially if you use an a123 LiPo pack.

Since you did bleed the brakes, you probably noticed the bleed screw on the master cylinder.
Makes it easier to get that last bubble out, without wasting a 1/2 quart of fluid.
That's on purpose, as well.  I was pretty happy about that, and I hope it helped you out.

The fuel lines are thin-walled, and yes, they kink in sharp bends.
BUT, the petcock at the tank is hard to fit with thick-walled tubing.  For me, at least.
They have thick-wall silicone tubing at Ace Hardware for 63 cents/foot.  Don't get the overpriced stuff from CycleGear.
If you change them, please try to find GOOD hose clamps.  Not the cheapo worm-screw type.  They strip too easily, and don't hold very well.  Plus, the little tail of extra material is a pain in tight areas.
These are great, but I've never been able to find them in my area.  Even specialty shops.

There's only one on the bike, and it's my favorite.  The reserve line (the longer one), at the frame petcock.

Again, apologies about the carbs.  Werase "traded" mine, apparently.
Mine were f-ing PERFECT, besides the bracket at the top losing it's galvanizing.
Sounds like you have it worked out, though.
Try 2 washers and 2.5 turns out (3 if you're feeling froggy) if you ever get the chance.  There are extra washers in the pack I gave you.

That inline filter is a high-flow, but catches down to 3 microns.  It was expensive.
Apparently, the ethanol in the fuel in my area gelled from the high humidity.  That's from sitting for only 2 weeks, if even that long.
I know it eats every other filter I've put on it.
Either that, or it was crud from the bottom of the bowls of Werase's carbs that loosened up.

If it ever clogs again, use a brass-bristled brush to just scrub it off.  Then, pull a bristle out of a cheap, wooden-handled steel brush to poke in the holes.  It's the best thing I've found for clearing out the mains, pilots, and the 3 little holes in the throat.
