I've been looking for a rear shock swap as well.  In addition to the Kat600 shock, I've also heard the Kat750 shock is (nearly) bolt-on and can be shoehorned in to fit, and it has a remote reservoir to boot.

isnt there supposed to be a cable attached to the top of it?
very interested though!

750 shocks can be adjusted without cable by sticking your hand in there and turning it.
600 shocks come without a cable so that's the only way to adjust em.
Cable gets screwed up often. remove that bracket too and its good.
Cool.

I got a katana 750 shock, from a 2001 bike but it was an ebay listing. You know how that goes. It has the preload collar on the bottom and rotary dial with 4 damping settings on top. It's definitely stiffer than stock. I have the preload at 4 and damping at 2. I also have stiffer front springs too so it's evenly stiff, the bike feels a lot more planted when cornering, and I don't scrape as easily anymore. Although every once in a while, I'll hit a dip or bump and my teeth rattle around. I guess I could tweak the preload a little as there is very little sag--haven't measured either--.

I don't believe that i matters on the year. I put an 06 in, and it looked pretty much the same as a junk 89 I have.

That said don't get an 89. They don't even have damping adjustment only preload, and they're old.

Any idea which, if any, katana shocks come with an external reservoir? My gs came with a rear shock that looks stockish, but has an external reservoir ziptied to the frame.
