Secure Lock-up Technique?

hey all,
i'm a new gs500 owner and i'm damn excited. thanks for all the good info on these pages.
i want to lock up my new purchase (i live in wash. dc) with one of those krptonite chains. as the chain is only 5.5 feet long i don't have much play at all since i need to lock the bike up to a sign post almost 2 feet back from the curb. is it secure to simply loop the chain through the rear wheel rim? or would it be better to get the chain through some part of the frame or rear chain/disc mechanism?

thanks a lot

D.C.  .... yikes  :o   You are braver than I am

when I lock up I always go through the rear wheel and one of the rear-peg brackets (which are welded to the frame).  That's about as secure as you can get it with a short chain.  I'm apprehensive about running a chain through or near the brake rotor or chain because even slight damage to those parts can cost you some serious coin.  If somebody gives your bike a tug, the wheel and peg brackets can absorb the force... I'm not so sure about the brake rotor/chain/sprocket.

good luck with that.

the bikeography is down for a bit

Gregg, vtlion is right, I also use the rear wheel-peg brackets combination to a ground bolt outside my home, you could make it a little more secure by fitting a disc-lock as well but you need to ensure you don't forget it. I have heard of bikes being lifted right of street posts of various kinds but I assume you are sure this is not a problem. Thing is, if some scrote wants it bad enough they will nick it, you simply have to make it too much trouble so that they knick someone else's. Same principal as airport security or any security for that matter, make a big show of it and deter them to someone else's airport or whatever. Covering a bike with a really tatty old cover, preferably with slug-trails often makes it unnatractive enough to deter the scrotes.

thanks for the tips guys. what you said makes sense.

i think the krypto chain combined with a cover should do the trick (a disc lock could also be in my future)

As one of the other posts said.......check that the sign post isn't a collar set in the ground securing the pole with a squarehead bolt. If  a thieving wanker loosens the bolt and lifts out the pole, your bike is going to be in the back of a pickup in about 20 seconds flat.
We don't really know what we're doing and even when we do, it doesn't seem to help. Bono

I park in a large lot at work, and there are no secure tie-points to be found on the concrete slab.  I have wondered if I might be able to bolt something down to the concrete.  Most of the commercial anchors seem to involve chiseling out large chunks of masonry.

Any suggestions for how to add a hardened eyelet to an existing concrete slab without drilling more than a few small holes?  I was thinking that a powder actuated nail gun would let me add a secure lock-down point to the parking lot in about 20 seconds :)

I would much prefer to fit one of this under the seat.  That would give the thief a  :o  moment, just have to make sure it is failsafe!!!!

So would you bring the nail gun with everywhere just so you could secure the bike where ever you are?  Don't do it in anicostia or yoou might get shot or over by the white house or secret service might shoot you.

Anyway good luck make the lock visible and it should make them want to move onto the next bike

also look into setting the chain thru the main frame rails. and at least the front wheel?, back one would be a little harder to remove, unless the sob comes with either very strong arms, or tools, if you could get the chain through both the wheels and the frame, you'd be doin great. :thumb:

More so a permanent fixture to the bike, located under the seat firing directly up (hence the need for a really really good failsafe measure for when I am riding - could be nasty).  This way if the bastard steals my bike, his date will never be the same again  :o

one could possibly do that, but would have to re-locate battery
