So now that the bike will be down for a couple weeks while I decided to do some of the projects I had planned in the future now, and put the bike back together once. I started stripping the tank to repair the bubbling it had going on, and I'll be giving it a good 2-stage primer and repainting it this week.

I'm absolutely going to keep it white. Because I really like white motorcycles. Maybe a slightly different shade, but most definately a warm white, that has a some yellow in it when the light hits it. Forgive my fanboi but BMW alpine white comes to mind. Although I'll probably look for something a little warmer and closer to the color Homer had on it.

I also decided on the pattern, I want two simple, thin racing stripes down the center, through the filler cap. Either 1in or 3/4 stripes.

What I can't decide on is the color of those stripes. I had settled on a very very very dark custom mix of a British Racing Green color, that I would achieve by starting with a nice formula for an old Jag, and darken it by hand until I liked it. But my girlfriend has belittled me about it being an old person combo enough to shake my resolve. So now I'm entertaining other accent color ideas.

Retro is the name of the game, the bike has a very hooligan/old school thing going on while somehow being modern and 'fightery, and I like it.

Options are,

  • That very dark green
  • A "warm" black
  • A dark, warm gray

Leaning towards either the first or third option. What do you guys think? Any other suggestions?

Maybe this'll help:

My family are all mechanics, sharecroppers, and vets.  Elementary school bus used to literally just drop me off at the Citgo station.  Those logos and signs and colors are pretty to me.

Of course, if you rip the colors off something from the '50s or so... you may come across like Mr. Ironic Beard Hipster Guy on here.
Might as well start sporting a metal-flake Fulmer and all that.
Talking about "faux-tina" or some garbage they found on their iPhone.

Find a way to match a faded, cracked, sun-bleached red-turned-pink sticker on an old sign or kid's toy (before the good plastics came out in the mid 80's) ... you're the man.
Or turd brown.  Yeah...

She wouldn't have called it an old person combo had you not called it a mixture of bmw alpine white and british racing green off of an old jag that you're going to darken by hand mixing. Tell her you're gonna paint it white with green stripes and see how it goes.

I say stick with brg. But then again I'm biased because I love the classic look. Also because I own a brg car myself.....

White with green stripes sounds awesome. I would just stick with your original idea.

Well I told her white with dark green stripes and she told me to buy a tweed hat.

W/e I think I'm just going to dig out some color samples and pick something to go with.

Nice otter btw.  ;)

It's YOUR bike. Not hers. Paint it whatever damn color YOU want!!!!!

This really irks me.  If you had doubts about the color beforehand and Asked for her feedback, fine. But her offering you her feedback that you should get a tweed hat, by way of insult, is plain Not On. People that Supposedly Love each other do Not insult each other - and - they Support each other's choices.

So what happens time down the track. Maybe you aren't together anymore and you're riding a bike with a color you didn't really want, but it pleased your At The Time girlfriend. Compromise is bullshit. It means giving up what you want and going along with the other person who gave up nothing.

Dude, stick to your frigging guns and paint the darn thing how you originally wanted and envisioned! Other people's dislike (be they spouses, boy/girl friends, coworkers, parents, etc.) of your color scheme don't matter. All that matters is that YOU like it.

Haha, no, we're just dating. I was asking for her advice because I was unsure. We're not living together or hopelessly in love or any of that sh!t. Not my bag. I'm just unsure about what to paint the damn thing. I'm pretty sure I want to stick with the original idea, but I'm unsure about it. One misgiving about the white is the frame, wheels and motor are all really dark? Does the white tank provide nice contrast or look out of place?

Should I do a gray tank with a black accent or stripes? Or do the tank white with the knee holder part of the tank dark green? Orrrr stick with my original white/green stripes idea?

SlimKlim

Bumpizzle.

K. The tank is primed and the green is painted and curing, later this week we'll stripe it and do the white.  :D The front fender is going to be white to help tie it in, and in the future it may get a custom seat cowl and/or belly pan.

My one remaining dilemma is, stripes on the fender or just plain white? We didn't paint the green on the fender because I thought it would look doofy being so narrow and having the support covering up a good portion of it anyway. So we're headed in the direction of plain white, but that could possibly change. Opinions?
