newbie carb question

Hi Everyone,

I'm Berk from BC Canada.  I am a newbie to this forum and have only owned one other motorcycle before.  My borther in law has a 1989 gs500 that I can pick up for really cheap if I can get it running.  He had an old rusted out tank that he replaced and then had the carbs rebuilt.  It has since sat with no fuel in it for about a year and now wouldn't start.  I brought it home, changed the spark plugs, checked the coils and did a few minor things like route the fuel lines properly.  I got it running but noticed that it is only running on one cylinder.  I've pulled the airbox, and carbs off and am following a manual step by step. I have no experience with carbs but since I don't have to buy the bike if I can't get it working I was willing to take the chance lol.  I have removed the float bowl, the float assembly the the main jet and the needle valve, it says that I should now be able to remove the piston guide (or slider support) through the top pf the carb, but I am not able to get it to move.  I don't want to pull to hard and break something, so I wonder if someone here can tell me how hard this thing should be to pull out?  It says that once the slider support is pulled out I can access the pilot jet, so I don't want to try unsrewing it from the float bowl side, right?

Any help would be much appreciated, I am looking forward to learning lots from this forum in the future if I can just get the other cylinder to run.

Thanks,
Berk

Hey there and welcome..... Many many carb questions have been answered on here and the guys here have done a ton to make it easy to do what they have already done.  Lemme post a link to the carb rebuild page.... This has some pictures and step by step on the jets and what not.  I have been messing with my carb for the better part of a week.

Not a link but copy and paste in your address bar.

Be safe and good luck...... Hit Buddah up if you need jets...... Cheaper than dealer and easier than ordering from Sudco.

Ciao

Thanks Firewalker, that is a very good reference for me, the pictures are very helpful.  Unfortunately, it still doesn't tell me if I need to remove the slider support in order to remove the pilot jet or if I need to remove the pilot jet in order to remove the slider.  The manual says slider first, but i can't get the slider to move at all.

I want to say the pilot and the main jet are on the same surface.  The pilot is going to be inside a tube that is silver in color.  Use a flat head that fits correctly.  If you are talking about the needle it will be on the top of the carb under the diaphragms.  The top has two screws...top plate and spring will come off......diaphragm is attached to the slides which pull straight up.  Keep in mind...there are two O rings under that top plate the size of a pencil eraser........DO NOT lose them.  The Needle will come up when you pull the slides up.  Don't lose any parts.......seriously.
