Weird....

My husband helped Rika (LilBrat) lower her GS.  We lowered it approx 2 inches.  Had to make dogbones.  Anyway that's not the issue...

While we were working on lowering it for her we found it was only running on one piston (freaky, yes).  We took the carbs apart, cleaned them and put them back on.  It was still running on one piston.  Fortunately we had an extra set of carbs so we put those on.  The bike now runs on both pistons (hurray!).

Here comes the question...

So we put the bike back together and set the idle at ~1200 she rode the bike around for 15 miles on the freeway.  We got off the freeway and it was idling at ~5000.  We reset it when we stopped at our destination.  After letting the bike sit for 3 hours we left.  The bike idled fine, we got to her house 15 miles away and the bike was idling at 5000 again.  Anyone know what's causing this?!  We're kinda stumped at why this is happening.   :dunno:

Your help is appreciated.

I hope you dropped the tubes in the front as far as they will go.  2 inches is pretty radical.

No idea on the carb problem.  I'm sure others will be all over that one.

Yes, we dropped the front and back.  Also made sure there is enough clearance if she goes over any speed bumps, etc., she doesn't bottom out.

I don't remember what year she has, but we had an '89.  So we canabalized the clip ons to lower the tubes.  It fits her very nice now.

She had the seat shaved 1 inch and had an inch added to the sole of her boots.  She is a shorty!

So the bike was lowered 2 inches (you made dogbones about what 3/8" longer?), the front dropped about 1", then shaved the seat, and she got elevator shoes?  Wow  :o

That's it in a nutshell.  She's 4'11".  I'll have to download the pics off the camera and put them up.

Sounds like maybe the idle screw is vibrating out, Otherwise you would keep turning the screw in and it would eventually bottom out.  You may need  to put some loctite on the screw if it keeps coming out(the semi-permanent type).  Just my thoughts

We thought about that, but figured it couldn't be that damned easy!  We'll have to try that and let you know.  Any other suggestions?

Always try the easy things first.

Case in point: Thought my Subaru's radiator was leaking, so I took the fans off to take a better look.  Broke 5 of 8 bolts in the process and had to drill them out(major pain in the arse).  There is one i couldnt get to, so one fan only has 3 bolts.  But in the meantime, I found a ventcap, right on top, that was loose and spilling coolant when the car was hot.  It was just too easy

Oh well, lesson learned again.  And I could still be wrong...

did you set the idle to 1200 after it had sufficient time to warm up (like 10 minutes)? I think if you set it while the engines cold it'll idle much higher when its hot....

BadBatzMaru

what happens if, after its hot and idling at 5000, you set the idle down to 1200???

The Buddha

1200 when cold and 5K when hot... is lean mix or sucking air. Spray wd40 when idling and see if idle shoots up or smoke comes from pipes... if not... lean mix. Open up air screws of put in 40 pilots.
Cool.

mine did that once it turned out one of my boots from my airbox was not 100% secure causing the bike to run lean so it got hot reallly quick and tfor some reson my idle was all over the place

good luck

Yes sucking air... The idle wanders due to the un predictability of the mix. Misfires also for the same reason.
