i'm putting in new clutches, steels and friction plates...the oem steels i ordered from cheap cycle parts don't have any abrasion or texture to them...their smooth and the one's i removed from the bike have tiny square indentions everywhere....will the new plates be ok to use still or should i scour them...i'm a little late on asking all this, bike's back together but if it means my clutches will last and grab longer i might pull the thing back apart

the square notches are just to judge plate wear.  they can be sanded are reused for a long time.  unless they have alot of blueing to them.  new ones should be fine just no wat to judge wear without a set of calipers or a micrometer

I was always led to believe they were for oil retention purposes 

Those square notches are just gremlin teeth marks.

I stand corrected sledge i guess the person that told me that didnt know as much as they thought.  after looking online they are for oil retention on the plates.
