Weird clicking noise - Please help!

Here's my situation:

A month or two ago I'm riding down the highway and start hearing a loud clicking noise when accelerating.  I look down and have oil covering my left boot. I determined the oil was coming from the left crankcase cover so I removed it and replaced the magneto gasket.  In the process I noticed the epoxy was coming off two of the magnets on the stator rotor so I re-applied epoxy.  I then changed the oil and filter and started it up...no more oil leak; however the clicking noise remains.

The clicking noise happens any time I give it throttle, whether in neutral or while riding.  It sounds like it's coming from that same crankcase.  I've read alot about "goats," but all of my magnets were perfectly in tact.  I did not check to see if they were loose or if the rotor had any loose bolts.

Could it still be those magnets hitting the stator (the stator looked perfect btw, no signs of damage), or something else?  I'm at a loss.  I don't know what the "normal" camshaft noise sounds like and I don't think it's the drive chain since it happens in neutral as well.  The bike only has 7500 miles on it and everything else is in perfect condition.  Any help would be appreciated.

could be a few things. could be a valve shim. could be a big end bearing on its way out (had this happen within the last couple of months on an engine of mine and ticking is how it started). could be from the front sprocket/chain.

you need to work out some things before you can try to diagnose it. does it happen in neutral if you throttle or only when in gear?

It happens in neutral as well.  Any time I throttle.  If I put my ear near the engine it definitely sounds like it's in the left crankcase that I just worked on but could be wrong.  Everything was great and then one day "bam!", oil leak and ticking/clicking from that left crankcase.

BTW this is a later year '07 GSF and I could be wrong but I've heard those aren't prone to the "camshaft" noise is that correct?

Paulcet

Correct, camshaft noise shouldn't be an issue for you.  Someone here, I can't remember who, had a couple of bolts back out in that vicinity.  Starter clutch maybe.

Thanks!  I'll check that out...just in case, anyone have other suggestions?  Buddha maybe?

Buddha what ... yea you have a buddha in your crankcase. :thumb:

Oh wait a sec ... buddha is a crankcase.  O0

I dunno man ... upper end of motor or lower end ?

Cool.
Buddha.
