I'm new to GS and need some diagnosis help

Hey there fellow GS friends. I'm new to GSTWIN as I just acquired my first cycle a 1993 model. Now to the diagnosis issue- (WITH CHOKE ON) Startup is fine and idles at 1200 rpm. Take off is fine and running through gears are great. Cycle hovers at about 3k rpm when coming to a stop. I have to let off clutch to bring it back down to idle speed of 1200 and that is even going into nuetral, then pulling clutch back in. (WITH BIKE WARMED UP AND CHOKE OFF) When moving choke to off position, the RPM immediately goes to about 4k. When coming to a stop, RPM hover about 4-5k. Once again I have to let off clutch only when stopped (holding break ofcourse) to let off pressure so RPM goes to idle speed of 1200. (I have tried stopping both ways- down clutching and rpm's stay high as well as just clutching/braking and at stop going through grears to first) I have only changed the spark plugs and did an oil change on it as i'm not mechanically inclined but willing to try or if atleast go to a repair shop i won't get ripped off based off of feedback. Any help would be great. Thanks again my new friends.

Hello, and welcome!

I would first say to look for a vacuum leak between the carbs and engine and at the top of the carbs.  Maybe even between the petcock and left carb.

And if you are not sure when the valve clearances were last checked, do that.

Search the forum for "hanging idle".

to check for leaks, would I spray some wd40 around the area and check for bubbles or it being sucked in? Or is there some other method/spray to use to check? I've already taken off the seat and dislodged the gas tank but have not fully removed the tank as not sure what hoses are to what yet. working on that but atleast i'm willing to learn to dissassemble and reasssemble to learn more on how they are put together. Unfortunately i have no friends that have bikes and 2 out of 6 cycle shops will look at it, but the other 4 won't even touch it because of it's age being a 93.

Check for leaks by running the engine at idle, spray WD-40 and listen for changes in idle speed.  It gets sucked in.

Sounds like your idle screw is set way high

You cant screw up anything someone here hasn't done before, go ahead and pull that tank, then the carbs, then put 125/40's in it. Set air screws to 3 and try it.
Short of dropping a wrench in the spark plug hole and then starting the bike, its all old news to people here. Hoses schmoses ... 30 seconds with a manual kiddo ... 89-00 is a piece of cake. 2 from tank to frame petcock, 2 from frame petcock to carbs, 1 from motor top to air box, one form bottom of air box to no where, one form carb top T to nowhere ... only 3 hoses are the same size.
The hoses are all going to get set in place, meaning if you leave them free, they will curl themsleves into the shape they have to be to fit. Cannot screw it up if you were trying.
Cool.
