ok, GPS is in!

OK, took the cowards way out. I wired a power outlet under the seat for the GPS. Radio shack had a cheap outlet with wires and fuse. Wired it to the battery. Got a RAM mount for the garmin (A terrific mount by the way) and ran the power cable under the tank to the battery. Looks pretty sweet.

The nuvi 765T is one of the only two nuvis to have bluetooth A2dp which means it'll pair with a stereo bluetooth headset and send instructions and music to the headset. the other units to do this are the Zumos which are crazy expensive. With a nuvi that allows custom routes, you can draw them in the garmin software or other tools like mapquest and import them into the nuvi.

Ah well, all this is still theory.

I didnt wire the socket as 'switched', although that's not hard to do with a cheap relay. I may need to go back and do that so the gps doesnt stay in charge mode. But I want to be able to trickle charge to the socket in the winter, so that would mean it needs to stay unswitched..

I originally had it higher and off to the left, but i really like it where it is. It doesnt block the gauges or even the key and it's out of the way and sheltered somewhat by the ST windscreen

I have the same RAM mount but for a Megellan 2000 very similar and have it mounted behind the wind shield. It's mountesd just like this Garmin to the the bar in the second pic. The RAM makes the GPS sit higher that the Garmin mount did. It's very easy to see, really don't have to take my eyes off the road. It would also offer some protection from rain.

And now you know why all the traffic was whizzing past you when your speedo said you were going 70 mph.  You were only going 62 MPH.  Harrrrrrr.  I used a Zumo to confirm the re-program of the bicycle computer on the GS last night, that's why I remember the numbers.

yeah the speedo is off by 5-10 percent.

i was thinking of putting the GPS on the bike frame lin front of the gauges, but I wanted to be able to reach it. i am thinking of wiring an earphone extension from the gps to under the seat and then run my ER-6s under my shirt to connect near my waist (like a heated vest) - i prefer a solid connection rather than the 'iffy' bluetooth experience.

probably. i havent used it enough to tell. you think by moving it forward and having it more vertical it'll be better? Maybe. I had a nuvi 650 for the last two years. Nice GPS. This one is a 765 - garmin seems to keep making things less good. Screen is very smudgy, touch is less responsive, seems dimmer... but the 650 couldn't do custom routes or bluetooth.

maybe I need a sun visor for it?  :confused:

Well I have mine just past the cluster and just behind the windscreen and the when the sun hits it I can't see shaZam!

broke down yesterday and wired an automotive relay into the circuit - so battery to inline blade fuse to relay to marine cig lighter receptacle, grounded to frame. got the switched power for the relay from the running light in the back. Damn there is no room under the seat for anything.

So now, it's off when the bike is off.

Mmm, I was wondering if the suction cup thingy worked on the tank. Seems like a real nice location, just behind the steering head. I'm gonna let sit overnight to see if the suction is still good then hook up my Tom/Tom - XL one - S.
I dont know how well this thing will hold up in heat and cold though! I might put a little leash on it in case it falls off I wont lose it.

i'd trust it for a day trip (on fresh in the morning) but not extended or overnight. a leash is a very good idea, along with cleaning before application.

that being said, i gave up on a stand alone gps unit after buying a G1 (android phone) off craigslist for cheap. the functions i listed above work very nicely with earphones. turn-by-turn just breaks into the music and then disappears again as it should. one device, many functions !

now i'm using a nexus (newer android phone) and Maverick for my on/off road adventures. It caches maps of your planned trips and can rely on GPS only, so if you loose cellular signal in a canyon you still know your path, and the maps still refresh.

anyway, yes it will hold if your tank and cup are clean.
