Removing rear turn signals

Want to replace the stock signals with aftermarket ones. Do I have to cut the wires to take them off? I've tried disassembling them but all the wires are attached to the bulb casing that's too large to fit through the hole.

The rear turn signals attach to the bikes wiring with bullet connectors. Unplug them and keep them intact because you will want to put them back on when you realize the ones you install aren't as visible or bright. The alternate pair I bought had their own wires and connectors on them. If you have to make a trip to Pep boys to buy some connectors, do it. I put the originals back on because they are more visible. Visible=safe.

Also, the hole is shaped oddly. An aftermarket pair won't likely fill the hole well.

Yeah the connections youre looking for are inside the tail. i have some cheap ones from ebay that do the job just fine. try to find some with bulbs instead of leds. the lower resistance of led signals will make them blink really fast.

I don't really like the look of the stock ones. The reason why I ask this is that the guy at the scrap yard said he has some stock signals from other bikes I might be interested in, and he wanted an original stock to see how it fits.

I did a full fenderectomy so I'd have to drill new holes to re-align the stock ones even.

It also sucks about others not being as bright. Am I setting myself up for disappointment? I might bring a little battery with me to check each lights' brightness. If they are the stock ones from other bikes, then the brightness should be fine.

Stock ones off of other bikes should be similar brightness. Can you just ride your bike there? You can plus them right into your bike to see how they all compare. Pull the side panel off and follow the cable and you'll see where the connectors are.

the buell signals are brighter, but you'll want an electric instead of resistive flasher relay. $5 @ autozone.

skip the LED signals unless:
they're free, and BRIGHT
you don't mind spending big dollaz on some really bright ones. i haven't seen cheap LED signals that didn't suck, yet.

Visibility is the key. If you ride in the street or highway, bigger and brighter is better.
I've been behind some bikes with those really cool, tiny, close mounted LED turn signals. Such a tiny dot you might as well not even have turn signals. They really were more distracting than a turn signal "What's that tiny blinking dot?"
The second GS I bought last week had the turn signals replaced with small, really cool ones. Cool? Maybe. Visible to other drivers? Not really. I bought a complete set of original GS500 turn signals off of ebay for $35 that I'm going to put back on. Call me old or whatever but I want to live to ride another day.

As for connecting things, always use connectors so you can change things. The easiest to use and reusable connector are the ones by Posi-Lock. Twist on, twist off. http://www.posi-lock.com/
Otherwise go to Radio Shack, auto store or Home Depot and get crimp on plugs & sockets. You can get ones that match the factory connectors on your GS so your new turn signals just plug in in place of the factory ones.

Always put mods & additions on connectors. You'll be glad you did maybe not today, but you will later.
