Hello all. I just got a 13t front sprocket for my 07 GS500f. I wanted to know where you guys find larger rear sprockets as I am unable to find them anywhere online.

Will putting a larger rear as well as the smaller front add more off the line oomf, or is the 13t in front enough to make the difference on its own.

Thank you.

The thirteen front alone should be more than enough unless you're trying to do nothing but wheelies all day. You have to think, going down one tooth in the front is equal to going up about three in the back. So it's like going up nine teeth in the back.

I don't really care about top end at all. Would adding a 42 rear be unenjoyable to ride?. I am not really looking for the front wheel to stay up I just want as much acceleration as I can get. I am getting a Yamaha R1 next year. I really need more oompf off the line and quicker throttle response in low rpms.

It'll give you plenty of get-up, the only thing is you have to shift so much it's kind of annoying. That's the main reason I took my 14t off. Bike almost feels faster now because it's so much smoother. As far as the low gears being barrable around town sure. Cause you'll be in fifth or sixth gear.

I don't think you will get anything driveable with such numbers.

You will get a top speed of 60MPH, and 6 gears to shift.

You'll be all day shifting, and you may cause some damage to the gearbox when shifting down.

Ddub410

So just putting a 13t on the front will make my top end 60mph?

I think he meant with a 13 front plus a bigger rear

The previous owner of my bike had a 17t sprocket on it. I dropped it down to a 15, which was 1 down from stock. It rides fine and I don't think I would want to bring the top speed down anymore than it already is. The good thing about these bikes is that the front sprocket change is a breeze!

i run a 14/45 and i am running 6300 rpms at 60

I'm able to get up to 90 by 5th gear now. 6th gear has gotten me up to 110 before, but it doesn't want to get over 7-8k to top out. Oh well, not like I break 90 on a daily basis anyways.

55 is the speed limit on all road my bike goes on. when i want to speed i take my quad to the track.

Well it looks like your bike has plenty to travel at a safe speed :)

I'm out in CA, highways can get up to 75, but 85 is the new 75 around here. I have had trouble keeping up with traffic before dropping my front sprocket a few teeth.

yeah with this little 500 i wont even think of eway riding.  so my geraing just makes it fun to play around on.  i like cruzing through town and not down shifting even one gear.  i can take the bike down to 25 and back up no chugging at all.

The 500 is money for Cali freeway riding, I only wish I had a windshield.  Easily does the required 85mph, and can split lanes much easier than those giant harleys and beemers.

So what should I expect my bike to be able to top out at with just the 13t sprocket in the front?

Yep, 4730x16/14x45/39=6237 rpm@60mph in 6th gear theoretical.  The 6300 sounds about right, your speedo and/or tach will vary.   :icon_lol:

I use to leave my 97 GS in 5th gear when running the freeways with big twin friends to match their roll-ons, worked even better after I changed the front sprocket to a 15T one.  Got a lot of leeway on freeway gears on a GS with it's 11k redline that gives a 140 mph theoretical top speed in 6th.  Should be able to hit over 100 mph in 4th with stock gearing.

Doesn't hurt to do a little math before buying and trying the hardware though.
407,400 miles in 30 years for 13,580 miles/year average.  Started riding 7/21/84 and hung up helmet 8/31/14.

I was quite wrong, saying that your top speed would be 60MPH.

I calculated using a spreadsheet: see the results:
