Valve adjustments with shims last longer than with the adjuster screws, so there is less maintenance with shim adjustments.

Shims hold their clearances significantly better, *if* you run them wide enough that the valves can stay cool. 

Seriously though, I race my GS. I much prefer shims to adjuster screws and lock-nuts. For most, the valves are already a dealer job, so it makes no difference. For the home mechanic, at least they went with a shim over bucket design (although again, I'd personally prefer shim-under-bucket.)

I HATED adjusting valves on my CB400f! Personally, I prefer the shim method. Though tracking down the right size can be a pain.

Using the shims allows the motor to be a little shorter and eliminates the weight of the rocker arms and shafts.
