Parting Out a 95 GS500

I have a red 1995 GS500 E that I would like to part out.  I bought it from Srinath in 03 or 04 and it was in great shape.  Unfortunately, I move a lot for work and didn't always have the time to work with it or have a good place to store it.  I was recently in the middle of replacing the block gasket and realized that the chain tensioner arm was eroded and deformed.  Check out the picture.  I'm assuming the tensioner went bad and held the arm too tightly against the timing chain.  Anyway, I think I would have to tear down the crankcase in order to replace the arm.  I don't think its worth it.

I'm living in Lovington, NM and will be moving to Indiana at the end of the year.  I would like to have sold the bike off by then.  Here are some pics.  The body is in OK shape and most of the parts are still good. PLEASE EXCUSE MY FILTHY TOOL SHED!!

Please email me if you are interested in a part.  I'll get you a price and some more pics if you would like.  I'll ship via USPS for most parts and all transactions will be conducted via PayPal.  I'll generate a list of all sold parts as soon as a part is sold.  I have never posted here before, but I am a motivated seller and this is not a scam.  All the parts I have are for sale.

I have the following brand new parts:
Right Grip
Left Grip
Right Side Mirror and Bracket
Crankcase to Block Gasket

Guys - this bike has 2 weld bars like in my avatar.
There have been a lot of people asking for em.
Get em.

BTW How did you buy in 03 from NC ? ... and you moved to NM was the bike red then too ? ... what is your name ?
Brian ?

The slipper will be replaceable just pulling the cylinders ... if you're doing head gasket, you have to do base gasket as well, I got a motor that is living proof of that. Fix the head gasket and it leaks from the base gasket.
Take off the motor, pull the heads and barrels replace both gaskets, check the bore, hone if needed, rings and do a 3 angle on the valves etc and fit it back. I think that removing the pan or somewhere you can pull that slipper out. Dont think you need to split the cases.

Cool.

Yes it is Brian.
I found that piece that I was looking for. BTW what did you do to my steering stop special ? I dont see it, but that just means ... well the pic doesn't have enough detail.

You ride it much ?
Did the front fender ever threaten to come loose ?
Zip ties and 2 sided tape ... never fails, every other year replace em.

Cool.

hey germ0191,

I'd be interested in the black instrumental cover.  PM me an offer?

and Buddha, can you tell me what the benefits of the handlebars you made are?  I'm curious as I don't remember what you said about it before.

Put me down for the two-weld handlebars, and let me know how much you want for the carbs. Look for a PM from me for shipping details, and thanks.

Just remembered that I need those colored plastic indicator light pieces also; let me know how much.

They feel like you have the 89 clip on's on, except like a wee bit lower and further forward, just ~1 inch.
On bikes I've owned I've slapped prototypes on, may have a total 1 off, there were bars that were shorter side to side, some had flatter angles, as I experimented I would put em on and run em. I may have changed something due to an unrelated situation, like the 3/16th wall I used on the first 2 dozen or so got harder to find and people complained they were obscenely heavy. So I went to 1/8th wall, no change in much of anything else, 1/8th is plenty thick, stock GS is just over a 16th ... I dunno what this had, but if ti is indeed brian's bike, I even had true clip on's on it at one time. These look like the shorties - I left ~1inch on the outside for doing bar end mirrors etc. As well as for someone wanting wider ... these dont have it. Or he cut it.

BTW the carbs should have proper jetting in it already for stock filter and pipe. Clean if needed, set floats if needed (they wear high with use) and run.

Cool.

I'm very, very interested in the headlight and brackets. How much would you want for those? Thanks!

Hi there,
I'd be very interested in the rear fairings, or at least the left side fairing depending on the price.

Send me a PM.

thanks!

barto: I have a couple dozen sets of tail fairings for an E in all kinds of colors and styles plus fugley ones that need painting. If you show me what you want, I might have a match or a complete set if you want to change colors.

(I confuse the heck out of people by changing the tail every month. "Did you get a new bike" or "Patrick - did you see that someone else has a GS500 parked outside the gym?" ---  it's just Junior   with a change of outfit.)

OK, someone mentioned "obsession" in regards to clip-ons. You can call my tail collection an obsession.   :cookoo: I admit it.

I would never cut your bars!  I think the reduction in wall thickness was a good thing.  The carbs are in real good shape.  I just cleaned them and adjusted the floats.  I even bought real Suzuki float bowl gaskets!  I couldn't get the liquid gasket stuff to hold properly.  The bowls don't drip anymore.  Buddha, please verify that you can remove the "slipper" without pulling apart the crankcase and I'll put the bike back together.  I actually just bought some new parts for it right before I saw the slipper problem.  It just seems like doing a crankcase tear-down would take more time than I really have to put into it and not to mention a small fortune in factory gaskets. BTW, you were right about having to replace the head gasket and base gasket at the same time (I learned that the hard way).  Thats how I discovered the bad slipper.

JB848

So Brian to help you relieve yourself of all of these parts I suggest a compiled list of parts for sale separately and collectively? If you got it from Buddha we won't hold that against you...just kidding Buddha. Yeah but a list is nice and keep it up to date as you sell? Good Luck

GSnoober

Really can't tell how bad the damage is from those photos; how much crud do you think went into the bottom end?

Buddha, any input on this? Can you estimate how bad the damage really is? If this GS can be fixed cheaply / easily, then it should be repaired and put back on the road. If the OP decides to part it out, I still want the two-weld handlebars, the carbs, and the colored plastic indicator light covers.

Good luck with this; let us know what you decide to do with the engine.

K I got a dead crankcase lying in my back yard, I'll try to get the slipper and see where it goes.
What does the manual say ? I know they wont explicitly say about the slipper, but till where is it shown as still sticking in the thing. You may be right, they may have  :cookoo: assumed that it will never go bad.
BTW that isn't a sign of too tight a cam chain, if anything its a manufacturing defect or just normal wear ...  :cookoo:
It cant be tight unless it had a manual tensioner in it, which I dont think it did.
Cool.

Thanks JB848.  I'll keep an up-to-date list of what is sold.

Buddha:  I looked through the clymer manual and it appears to have a "T" piece at the bottom of the slipper, located deep in the underbelly of the crankcase.  I tried pulling it out with only the block removed and to no avail.  It doesn't look like normal to me because the plastic is totally worn off of the one side.  I don't know how gunked up the lower end is.  I kinda afraid to drain it.

When I replaced the head gasket it looked fine.  I put the bike back together and ran it in neutral for five minutes while oil spewed from the block/crankcase gasket.  I pulled it back apart to replace the base gasket and thats when I discovered the damaged slipper.  Maybe I installed the tensioner improperly.
