GS has a steel cylinder bore, right?

I tried searching for this but couldn't find anything but what seemed like speculation...

They aren't nikasil lined, are they?

They are not, however you can remove the liners, put in aluminum liners like my friend did on his GR ... or I think he didn't have any liners at all, it was bored to a whopping 851cc ... he just nikasiled the walls. The thing is, if you are handfitting rings in it, you can run the cylinder to piston a lot tighter ... cos there will be no differential expansion. He was running total seal gapless rings. He mentioned running @ 1/2 the tolerance of steel liners.
However I am not exactly sure if he ever put it together or what ... so no idea what it did.

The reason I'm asking is to determine whether I should hone the cylinder before sticking new rings in there. I was told that nikasil wouldn't need any work, just replace the rings, but steel should be honed.

Looks like I'll do some honing :dunno_black:

they do have a steel liner have look at the pictures in a manual or get one from

Haha, why didn't I think to look in the manual...it says it's a cast iron liner right on page 134 of the Clymer manual :icon_rolleyes:

It all starts with some jets...then suspension, then brakes, controls, engine swaps...  ;)

It all starts with some jets...then suspension, then brakes, controls, engine swaps...  ;)

The guy I'm talking about was a super machinist. He did a bunch of work to his GR motor and stuffed it in the gs. I believe he removed the liner and used the wall bored and honed to the size he wanted - I suspect it was a 10mm overbore, now remember this is a GR not a GS motor, its got more meat cos its head is a bit bigger and the cyls match that sorta, he put a GS head on it and the cyl was bigger than the head, then he found out the GR head is actually smaller volume and has larger overall area to cut and machine away ... so I believe he was running the GR head ... either way a GR is 3mm larger bore and 13mm larger stroke than a GS. He had a 13mm bore and 18mm stroke over a GS ... cos he stroked that motor 5mm. It was 851cc and had bigger everything, but it was not high compression, it was pretty much a 9-9.5 ... ergo ... he could have bought a SV1000 and handily beat the bike he was building. Go figure ...

Understandable coming from a machinist though. Sometimes ya' just have to mod.
I just do it at a simpler level.
A much simpler level: (box it up & send it to The Buddha)
