how to tell if it is the starter?

Well, I'm still having some issues starting Flick. It seems every six or seventh time I go to start ole boy I will get the click click click sound. I can push it a little to simulate a partial bump start and usually get it to go. I know it is something with the starter or electrical. I managed to break the heads off both of the bolts so I have to get those off before I can get the starter out. Do, you think once I get it out if the dealership can test it like they do with auto starters?

I was having same rapid clicking noise trying to start.  Replaced my battery with a trugel battery and no more clicks. Starts up every time now.  To me it sounds like you have a weak battery.  I think local autoparts stores should be able to test the starter.

keep me posted, I may be able to hook you up with a starter

I think the starter motor may have a bad spot on the commutator.  It would probably work just fine when you get it to the shop, at least that's my luck.

I once had a bad starter for my minivan which would only fail when hot.  When I took it back to the autoparts store to exchange it, they put it on their test bench and of course it worked just fine (as I told him it would) and they didn't want to give me another one.  I had to tell the guy all of my trouble shooting steps and prove I knew more about the starting circuit than he did.

In order from most to least likely: Bad battery, bad solenoid, bad connections, bad starter.

1. How old is your battery?
2. When you 'simulate a partial bump start' is this in gear, do you use the clutch?
3. Do you have access to another vehicle you can jump start from? If so, when it happens again try a jump start. If it goes, that would pretty much prove its a bad battery.

1. Battery is a year old. We have tested it it is fine.
2. We have full battery voltage at the starter terminal solenoid is functioning properly. Press the starter button got 12.89 on the voltmeter.

I'm sure it is the starter. Now the big question. The two little bolts that hold it in both heads sheared off when I tried to take them out. Anyone know how to get at them so I can drill them out etc..l.

Pull the tank, carbs , airbox , maybe even one or both intake runners. Not sure if the tensioner will be in the way-but might.

Sucks that they broke off... Have you drilled out bolts before??

When the 2nd Amendment is lost, the rest will soon follow.
