Does anyone know where to buy aftermarket bar ends?  I'd like to replace mine eventually.  Maybe bar end slider type.

The old ones are still usable but I need to replace a screw in the left bar end.  Does anyone know where I can buy a replacement for this?  I took it to HD and local hardware store and they don't have the exact size.  I think I need a size 6 (metric) x 2 1/4 long with fine threading.

:dunno:

OK Press fit bar ends wont fit your bar if the bar is designed to fit screw in bar end's. That nut is going to get in the way. Replace the bar and the press fits will fit the num less bars you can get aftermarket. Or buy a tap and clean the threads on the nut and you can stay with the stock screw in.
Cool.

Yeah, I have never had luck at Home Depot with metric stuff.  But my local Lowe's has a "metric section".  In the past I have been able to find M6 x 1.00 bolts in lengths up to 90mm (3.5"), but lately I haven't found anything longer than 60mm.

See the last couple table entries on my Throttle Retainer page.

60mm should be plenty long for your application, since you don't need to accommodate a wing nut.

How about this?

6mm x 1.0 (not sure what the 1.0 is?)

lengths of 60mm to 80mm.

Kerry you might be able to buy one and replace your head head bolt like you mentioned on your throttle setup.

Thanks for the link!  I was actually thinking about the pan head style offered on a related page.

Over time the bolt on my "throttle retainer" works its way outward.  To "reset" things I spin the thumbscrew all the way out to the bolt head and then screw the entire bolt as far back into the bar end as I can. The hex cap gets in the way of spinning the thumbscrew all the way out, but it gives me more grip for screwing the bolt back in.

Decisions, decisions.... maybe I'll take my Dremel to the thumbscrew to create some clearance.

Doh!  I just saw on bikebandit that you can order the OEM screws for something like $1.50 each.  I had mistakenly thought it was not available when I didn't see it on the lever page.

I guess I could eventually order new bar ends from there as well.  About $23 each for the assembly.

Wait so there are no replacement bar ends available for the GS' with the screw in type stock 'ends? I have an 89 with the clip-ons if that makes a difference. My bar ends are beat up and rusty which I'm hoping to replace to go wit the new paintjob.

I don't know what you can do about the "beat up" part, but the "rusty" part can be taken care of with Rust Stripper and/or sandpaper, a bit of black spray paint (or color of your choice) and a shot of clear coat.

That's what I did when I replaced my LOST(!) bar end with one from a motorcycle wrecking yard in Colorado.  It arrived with some moderate rust on it, but you can't even tell now.

You can buy the OEM bar end off bikebandit for about $22-$23 per set or something like that - you'll have to verify.  I just bought the screw.

That's right, and they'll even go and check if you bring the bolt from the bar end.  Unlike some other large home improvement stores.  If you want to have a change, you can get some Lockhart-Phillips screw-in bar ends, and swap the allen bolt they give you (it's too big!) with a M6 bolt with the triangle  profile head (dunno what it's called) cut down to the proper length.

OK to fit a bar end weight on a stock 89-00 GS bar (the one with a threaded insert in the bar) you basically take the bar end weight and remove the rubber bushing... and cut a thin slice of it and grind/cut down the bar end at the part that is next to the rubber bushing till its very  very short. ~1/8 of an inch is all it should stick out from the bar end. Put the rubber washer on it and fit it against the bar and see how much it sticks out and how you like it. OK if it sticks too far, shave some more, if its not far enough... well you should have thought of that before getting over happy with the grinding. Then screw it in the bar ... the bolts that comes with the bar end will screw into your stock bar nut. That bolt is just allen head as opposed to the phillips head on the stock. Did it 5 years ago and have loved it since. I have those huge BMW targeted ones ~ 2 time the size of the sport bike ones.
