How to convince the "Boss" that you need a new toy...

Not quite sure on this one...last time I had the money in the bank, so her "we can't afford it right now" argument was toast...this time, I just want to upgrade to a more comfortable (and powerful) bike...she has no interest in going for a ride, so the more power to make it safer for two up is out...

Any suggestions as to tactics would be helpful...

If I can't come up with anything, I may try the white lie of "it's not that much more money...we can afford it..." or the "this is the last bike I will want for quite a while"...

HELP!!!

Better brakes = safer?
Bigger rear tire= more traction, thus safer?
More power= get out of the way if necessary, safer?

I guess if your skills of persuasion are good enough, you can be like me and do what you want.

Try dropping down to 4 Oreos and set your pilot screw 3 turns out.

That's a familiar one. I doubt I would've tried to get a new bike any time soon but I found a loophole. My wife found a puppy she just had to have. We have 2 dogs already, and I really didn't feel the need for a 3rd. Well she insisted that we needed to bring her home. Eventually I decided that we could bring home a 3rd dog we didn't really need if I could get a 2nd bike I didn't really need.

She got this.....

and next September after my current loan is paid off, I can get out a new loan to hopefully find me one of these....

Good luck! If you're willing to go without for a few weeks you can always sell the GS first and use the cash on another bike. It'll be easier to negotiate it if you're willing to give up your current bike first.

tt_four

to be honest, puppy money will probably buy me something a little closer to this, but still, I didn't want the fairings anyway!

madjak30

To be honest, she already knows it makes more sense to sell the GS in the spring, and I want to buy a bike in the winter to keep the negotiations on my side of things...really I already have the money, but it is ear marked for a new truck...steal from Peter to pay Paul...or something like that...just need to convince her that it is a good idea...and worst case, I wait another year to get a new truck...what's the difference...250,000kms (156,250 miles) or 300,000kms (187,500 miles)...that's only midlife for a diesel...plus Santa is being very good to her this year... :thumb: :icon_twisted:

Every zero you add to the tolerance adds a zero to the price.

If the product "fails" will the product liability insurance pay for the "failure" until it turns 18?

ohgood

work before play, save double the bike price.... then get it.

you'll appreciate the newer truck, and she'll appreciate the added cushion in the bank.

also, if you have to persuade her, you're doing it wrong.... when she begins to see your happiness from xyz hobby, and sees it's therapeutic, she'll likely endorse it. it's a two way street though, tit for tat... er, maybe give and take is a better expression for a married couple ;-)

i've mentioned selling mine, the wife won't have it. i got a DRZ this year, the time to ride it, and she got a new house. COUGH, i got a garage to boot, but yes, give and take.

:)

Pretty sure it's standard for the 04-05 version in the US. You just don't see many of them still on bikes. Finding a bike with a stock exhaust that isn't an eyesore is really a pleasant surprise. Kawasaki did a nice job on their 03-04 zx636r. Otherwise I've always been a big fan of undertail or underbelly exhausts for that reason.

redhenracing2

I guess that's true, gixxers with stock pipes are pretty rare. The one on my bike was actually quite attractive, I just can't stand the quiet. I always thought about doing an undertail on the Gs, but mr. Knopf posted up one that he made himself that was super badass, can't find the picture at the moment. Looked just like Devil's 'Shotgun' model.

I think that is a pic from a bike in the UK...the price is on the front wheel...the exhaust kinda looks aftermarket to me, but quite the rocket launcher...still not as bad as this Yamaha...

To me, it really takes away from a mean looking cruiser...Yamaha Warior, in case you are wondering...

Shaddow

See when I wanted to get ride of my GN250 my wife was against it. In the end I sold a car and the GN250 to cover the cost and I would have had a couple K spare except the dog went and had a fight with a Red Belly Black and the vet bills killed that and most of my savings to get her better.

So A year on from that I'm contemplating getting a SV650S (I change vehicles on a yearly basis. I love variety and get bored easily. Before bikes I've owned 28 registered cars, currently have one car, one project car (long term) and the GS500). I made mention to her I noticed (in Australia) the SV650S' aren't going for much more than my GS500 sells for. She asked me if I was thinking of upgrading. I nodded my head maybe in a year. She replied with, well when the zed is back on the road why don't you it then. The zed is only about 4 months from being back on the road...

She sees it as I will stop dropping hints about wanting a bigger bike if I have something to work towards. The cost to the family is minimal. And finally I finish the blasted (as she sees it) zed. Been ongoing project for a few years now.

Glad your dog is ok. I think my dog is gonna need leg surgery at some point in the near future. Something to do with the ACL in his right back leg. Took him to the vet a while ago, they gave him a shot and he got better pretty quick, but they said to keep an eye on it. Lately it's been getting worse again, and now that we've got the puppy, his old play buddy is usually occupied and while those 2 are off wrestling he and his sore leg just hang out on the couch. The lack reduction of exercise has definitely not been good for his leg.

Either way, definitely hope that doesn't have to change future bike plans. Even if I don't have cash for a normal second bike, that would be a good excuse to go pick up a beat up 91-95 gsxr750 for like $700-1000 and make it a long term/budget project. My wife's computer just died a week or two ago, and mine is definitely on it's last leg, so those are gonna need replaced as well! It's a laptop but the battery is dead so it has to stay plugged in, the screen won't show a picture so it's hooked up to a spare monitor, and the cable just started going bad, so the screen is currently tinted red, but it'll also go blue or green if the cable is angled in a different direction, haha.  :technical:

I actually like quiet bikes. The thing I don't like is that raspy noise that stock pipes make. Wish they could make stock pipes that were quiet, but still had that aftermarket noise to them. The pipe on the GS is manageable. I'm going to be making some exhaust silencers for the XB9 this winter though. That things is waaay too loud.

Get a new "Boss". Problem solved.

As long as their is money to pay the bills my wife doesn't care.

Why didn't you just go the whole way and buy me a f@#king Kawasaki you bastards.

madjak30

Naa...kinda attached to the one I have...although after the review I had on Monday...I may be able to pull the same trick as last year and hand her a bonus check...no more "we can't afford it"...I love my bonus checks... :woohoo:

Although, if I got over time (today was 15hrs) I would probably be ahead of the game...oh well...choices made in life... :dunno_black:

SAFE-T

If you can actually afford it, there is no need for convincing.

Janx101

well.. after some minutes of thinking... i will provide an example .. and then the solution may become apparent

just after i got my bike i noticed some cracks that were previously in the fairing were extending themselves a bit due to vibration i guess?
.. anyway.. i took the fairing off and setup the dual "streetfighter" headlights that the previous owner supplied in the sale.

took 3 days for the missus and kids (3 girls) to even really notice that the bike looked any different....

so... change the bike... and if she notices then tell her you only spent a little bit of money on a few minor "cosmetic issues" ... you could still get in trouble for it i guess.. but then you have the new toy and she cant stay on the warpath forever.. simple  :thumb:

That doesn't sound like married advice to me. haha. Just because you can technically afford to pay for a new bike doesn't mean your other half doesn't still need convincing that the money should be spent on a motorcycle. In my opinion I think I could afford a couple more motorcycles, but my wife is under the opinion that we should be affording a new kitchen, new computer  because it has all kinds of features that we're never gonna use, and numerous other things. It's a lot less about being able to afford something, and more about justifying it because otherwise the next time something comes up and you say "I don't know if we have the cash for that", you're just going to hear "we could've bought it if you didn't have to have that motorcycle....."  haha, always gotta make sure it's cleared first so it doesn't come back to bite you.

madjak30

I think tt_four gets it...it's not the dollars and cents of it, it's getting the "go ahead" from the boss...mine wants a new house...we've only been in this one for four years...??...so chances are we will be remodelling the kitchen (but she doesn't cook??) so that I can have my bike...but she has also been hinting at a new washer/dryer combo...I think that women are much better at this than we realize...I think if I said we could get the new appliances when I get a new bike we will be shopping very soon...

Later. (sound like the new puppy thing, tt??)
