My wife recently purchased an '89 GS500.  She is alittle vertically challenged so we need to look at lowering it.  Can anyone recommend some manufacturers of lowering kits (for the GS500) and shaved seats?

Thanks

Welcome Yamaman!

There has been a lot of threads on this. Do a search on 'lowering' and  'dogbones'.
The motorcycle is no longer the hobby, the skill has become the hobby.

Power does not compare to skill.  What good is power without the skill to use it?

get a drill and make them yourself

do a search for the specifics

it's a 1:3 or 1:5 ratio  and the new dogbones need to be ....longer
1/(*) inch longer dogbones will lower the rear 1 inch

Actually, I just 'shaved' the seat on my bike last night.

The cover on my 2002 is held on by staples that can all be removed in 5 minutes using needlenose.

I used a bread knife that's about 12" long to saw into the foam and remove about 3/4 to 1".

In my case, I replaced the foam with a gel pad.  Part of my goal here was to also make the seat more level.  It seemed to be slanted towards the front which became uncomfortable after a while.

I reattached the cover in 10 min. using a heavy duty stapler that held T50 1/4 in staples. Available at hardware stores.

I've also cut seat foam in the past using an electric carving knife.

I have pictures that I'll try to post at some point.

This link will show you my first pass at installing the gel-pad.  I didn't want to cut the foam unless I had to. I decided the the pad increased the height of the seat too much.

I took others advice and trimmed the stock seat foam. I rode 65 mi. today and it felt fine.  1000% improvement.
