I've been laid off since January 2009 and still haven't been able to land a job. (i was working as a machinist) My previous employeer is posting ads for my previous job. (pisses me off but not much I can do) I've been going to school for my associates in network engineering in the mean time. only one quarter left on that. I've seen so many places post in that they check your credit as part of the application process. How much stock do you guys think a company takes in this? Since being laid off for almost two years my credit has gone to shaZam!. I'm wondering if this is the reason I can't seem to land a job. AHHHHHH!!! It's driving me crazy! Anyways. End of rant. Have a happy holiday season.

At the banks I have worked @ it seems to be very much a part of their screening. So that's about all I know.

I lost my security job at Lockheed Martin because of my credit due to my health. I'm hearing it is becoming more and more of an issue!

I would try a small local business first. You would be more likely to get an initial interview to explain your situation.

Oh man, well lockheed is a full on security clearance type job. I however have yelled and screamed @ medical billing people and literally blasted them for incompetence and got out of a 5K bill, but well, it was 99% their fault, I wrote and called and literally ran them into the ground. They finally pulled it off my credit after I threatened legal action after supplying tons of documents etc. Its deep and complicated, just that it was for a lot of lab work for my son that they drew blood so poorly kiddo fainted, and they had to draw 3-4 times over 15 days. 2 were fasting, poor kid starved till 11 am.
Medical BS IMHO should not be reported to credit the same way the rest is, cos medical bills are 99% fluff.

It used to not be reported the same way. but, now they consider it the same. Which for me one hosptial admit has ruined me for life. It turned out to be two weeks with half of that in ICU. Total was a little over $100,000 I only went a month without insurance and well I'll never own a house. Kinda depressing why keep trying to better myself when someone will keep me down due to circumstances beyond my control!

100K in medical expenses ... see 99% of that is BS. K lets calculate, its basically a hotel room with extra lighting and some doctors. I dont see it costing even 2-300 a day. BTW the ER docs are not the specialists, they are basically the kids you see on whatever the show is, grey's anatomy or that comedy one with the black guy and white guy (Zach Braff) ... that one. Sadly they pay them peanuts.
Its a 100K, and insurance pays them maybe 10%, so they get 10000 bucks, and still they make like bandits cos they are out $300 max.
I would seriously say if the hospitals/doctors were to put up a price list on the door/wall they will seriously drop the costs to about 10-20% of what it is now, then medical insurance will disappear, and the medicare/medicaid hole will also disappear. I believe we will also start seeing the chinese restaurant style menu flyers on your door soon after.
Wont it be fun to see on your door a flyer with :-

Broken arm/leg - $100. Compound Fracture Add - $25.
Fever - $50.
Ear wax clean up - $75 (do not laugh, I had to have this done last month cos I was a Qtip addict and apparently it just dries and packs the wax deeper WTF).
Colonoscopy - Monthly special $150.

India is sorta like that, doctors have set fees to see you. That is published @ the door or just inside. Then they have charges for shots or medication, Xrays etc that also they tell you before they do it to you.

Doctors still make good money cos they dont pay huge malpractice crap fees, have massive overheads and buy new equipment financed with debt. Here they use equipment as a substitute for actual skill, diagnosis and thinking it through.

ohgood

they're using credit as a filter. its just another filter like race age or disabilities. but the gov allows it. complete bullshit. work for a better place (smaller) and forget credit. buy a house someday and nothing else on credit. eff the system.

(just bought a house with no history for over 12 years)

you'll land a good one.... wait for the best.

tt_four: "and believe me, BMW motorcycles are 50% metal, rubber and plastic, and 50% useless

ohgood

also wanted to say credit is currently complete bullshit. I can finance a $200,000+ house with nothing down and no history, but a small business loan is impossible. wtf?

haven't paid anything but cash for 12 years+ and can buy a $4 TV without any question,  on credit? wtf

buy a car with zero down and 0 interest,  wtf?

but a business loan is a nono.

credit as a hiring filter should be illegal. sure they'll just say something else like overqualified, but we all know its because ur credit sucks, or ur black, or ur crippled in some way. ok flip flop it and say white.... whatever.

The most recent place that turned me down actually told me that I just don't have enough experience. Funny thing, all I've really got is my college so no real  world experience in the IT field. So in a way I understand the not enough experience line. Then again, everyone starts at the bottom I believe and you would think that someone would want to give me the experience needed. *Sigh*

yeah, with the prices the hospital's charge a day I could be staying at the Grand Floridian and have amazing food. In the hospital the bed's in most of the wings I've been in barely work and the TV only goes up to 42. Which pisses me off to no end because the history channel is on 43. Is it a conspiracy to piss me off :cookoo: When I was in the hospital in Boston they even charged you $15 an admit for TV WTF? Celebration Health tried this krap charging $10 a day for tv/internet. Everytime I was admitted I would gripe about it I think I single handedly changed their policy with all of my griping! It just wasn't fair what the hell else was I going to do in a hospital? They would try to tell me well it's really not that much and I would reply I spend two weeks here at $10 a day that is $140 do you think I can afford that being that I'm here and not working. I know it was aimed at the tourist that came in but it was bull shite!

I honestly think socialized medicine is better than what we have now.

Socialized medicine is NOT the answer.  India has it just about right.  We need to can the overly-litigious BS and drop the trillion plus idiotic regulations.
Recently, I had a really hectic week that completely screwed my sleep patterns.  I have no allergies, no medical conditions, etc.  To get a simple prescription for lunesta or ambien would have cost $300+......just for the visit.  $300 for a doc to ask me if I had any allergies, etc and sign his name on a piece of paper.....grand total 5 minutes.  On the other hand, I know what malpractice insurance costs (way more than many members of this board make per annum, and dear god help you if you're a plastic surgeon)

I know someone that's currently in India receiving medical treatment that's not even available in the US and that is significantly improving quality of life.  They've been there ~3 months receiving treatment and the bill is under 20k.  I was in the ER for 4 hours after my wreck and the bill was nearly that high.....

Back to the topic:
It's just another screening technique.  Like ohgood said, apply to smaller companies, they typically don't bother.

Mary, did you have an actual clearance while working with LM?  While bad credit can keep you from getting a clearance, they typically won't revoke it once issued.  I knew a guy that kept his clearance with 3 vehicle repossessions...

I did have the clearance for two years and they reassessed it. I spoke with an "agent" for more then six hours at the local library about all of my bills. They had requested more indepth information about my school loans and medical bills. I was in the hospital with a bad case of heart failure. I called them to inform them of my plight my calls were not answered. I come back to work and they stated that my clearances had been revoked due to failure to comply. I was transferred to a hotel and lost $2.00 an hour this job expected me to work eight plus hours without a bathroom break much less a meal break so I went to Universal.

I actually got a call back from LockHeed stating that two years have passed since then to reapply and I could probably work atleast another six months to a year before I have to go through it all again. I'd rather not though I'm gonna get into UCF and hopefully in the next couple of semesters get an internship in the psychology field.

On the other hand... If my job history is weak, and my credit history is good, give me a chance to build on demonstrated success.  Also...  If I were an employer, I might legitimately prefer a candidate with committments.  Turnover is expensive.  The job may not keep someone from moving away to be with his technologically matched internet sweetheart and live in her parent's basement somewhere in Ohio; but the job AND the mortgage together might.

But then again... Yes.  Someone who falls behind because of illness or injury should not be judged the same as one who falls behind because of bar tabs and motorcycle repairs.

Wow...the job market sucks...I went into the trades when I was 29 after being in management for the devil (Wal-Mart... :icon_twisted:)...worked for one contractor for my whole apprenticeship, then was poached by the company I still work for 8yrs later...and now I am management again...full circle (kinda)

I know the trades isn't for everyone, but man has it been great for me...there will always be a need for an electrician, a plumber, carpenter, welder, etc...and business admin, every company in the world has to pay bills and employees somehow...HR departments...medical...there will always be a need for all this stuff...it's just a matter of finding something that doesn't bore you to death...you gotta have fun sometimes at work, or you end up moving on...

Maybe I've just been lucky, but I would like to think that I have had something to do with my success... :dunno_black:

Later.

Yeah, some of it has to do with you being a good employee etc. But, places these days could careless about longevity with one company any more. I know at Disney once you get near the retriement age they do everything they can to get rid of you. I've seen them do some chitty stuff to people. They also love doing the buy outs. I remember one manager worked there 23 years they offered him the buy out or a really bad position he took the buy out. he asked weather he could keep his silver pass and they said no. Really a guy spends 23 years with your company and you screw him over and won't even let him keep his passes!

for me I lost my job there after 8 years. They wanted someone else in my spot but because I was senior to that person they didn't have a leg to stand on. I got sick was in ICU my friend called to tell them what was up. I finally get out of the hospital first thing I do is go to health services I was termed as a no call no show. They got their person but I heard he quit two weeks later so they had to go six months without a coordinator until the next bid.
