Blown Engine / Pics / Need Help

So sometime last summer my bike blew up. At the time I had no money and no time so she unfortunately just sat till today. I finally got enough money to justify taking a peek at what had happened.

As you can see she is done. Time to find another engine. I had a question for you guys, Can you swap in a GS500F engine into a GS500E frame? I am aware that it has an oil cooler, and i can mount that easily enough, but I wanted to know if the engines were swappable.

Yes, they are exactly the same except for the oil cooler as far as I know.

Do you know what led to this damage? I've seen this exact thing on another GS and it was the lack of oil :

Huh? Damn. I had just replaced the clutch cover gasket and done an oil swap about a month or so earlier. I actually checked the oil levels that week before she detonated and everything seemed fine. She must have sprung a leak and bled out quick because everything was cool and sounding good that morning until about 10 seconds until she blew. What the hell.

22K, although only the last 5k were under my supervision. I had had previous problems fixing problems caused by improper maintenance from the previous owners. She should have lived longer, but given that I only paid 800 for the bike when I started out, I suppose I can't complain.

If it was oil starvation, then it was probably a clogged passage. Either way, that sucks.

i had a dream last night that my engine blew up

metal shavings were flying out of the exhaust that looked like shaved chocolate

i took the head off and there were two oblong cylinders, one bigger than the other, mounted longitudinally in my gs500

i wonder what all that was about

Nah, use the old crank trigger and cdi, and carbs can go either way.

But if you do use the new crank trigger, then you would need the new cdi and carbs.

I know that a complete 2009 head and cylinder setup will bolt right up to a 2002 bottom end. The 09 carb will also bolt right up without needing any electronics/wiring work. I've done this myself.

In your case, just look for the cheapest complete replacement engine you can find. That bottom end is going to need a rebuild and it usually isn't worth the cost of rebuild.

Yea if it seized like that bottom end is DOA too.
