I'm looking for a black gas tank in great condition for an '04 GS500. 

Conversely, will an earlier tank (89-02) fit an '04?

Older tank - not very well. Seat is different as are the side plastics. You probably could put one on since the mounts are the same, but it would look really bad. There are tanks on ebay for newer models relatively cheap ($100-$200 range)

I've rode around with an older style tank on my originally newer tank equipped 2002 GS and the fit of the tank on the frame itself was just fine... so good that you would think it came like that from the factory. However, my newer style seat wrapped around the sides of the tank and rubbed on the tank's paint at two small spots. I didn't have issues with the tail plastics since I never put them back on after taking them off to get em repainted

Thanks for the info.  I thought this would be the case after looking at pics of the two.  The newer ones have an indentation right where the seat goes that the older ones do not.

Thanks for the links!  I've been searching ebayMotors multiple times a day for a black tank with no dents.  I had not seen the ones on regular ebay that weren't in the US, but I'll look into them.
