hi all, ok i got this used 89 gs500 from a friend i was going to paint the tank for him and ended up buying the bike instead so i got it without the tank on it, i was looking at the petcock and there is what seems to be a filter or screen missing (it goes into the tank) my friends know less than i do and isn't sure what happen to it. so tell me is it a filter/screen and can you get one without getting a whole new petcock? the Suzuki dealer here said i had to get the whole thing...that would bite...BIG! you guys must love these green newbee questions lol also can you lower the seat on these things? you guys are great i love the site...THANKS

Welcome!!!

I haven't seen the availaility for a new screen without the whole petcock.  But if you can wait 4-5 days I can sell you the stock petcock (with the screen) from my '92.  I'm replacing my tank and have a Pingle petcock I'm putting on.

that would be awsome what are you looking to get for it?

Doesn't sound like it's needed, but you could also add a $2 1/4" diameter in-line fuel filter in the fuel hose before the carbs.  In fact, you should do that anyways :) .  That would keep crud from getting into the carbs.

but i figured crud may get into the shutoff valve. the bike has sat for about 2 years and if i have a prob getting it going then i may think its the petcock "screen"  thats not there, if all else fails i will do just the inline, and i am going to do that anyhow like you say.if anything else i am learning this Clymer manual well, and i don't really like it much...kind of vague

if you do get a filter make sure the element is paper and not sythetic material paper filters smaller particles which can clog just as bad as big ones (learned the hard way)
