Police Say Teen Intentionally Hit Motorcycle In Lakewood

March 17, 2005

By Keith Eldridge

LAKEWOOD - A mother was horrified to hear that hit-and-run accident that nearly killed her young son and his father is believed to have been intentional. And police say our story 10 days ago helped them make an arrest.

"(They) almost killed my son and his father, could have," said Victim's mother Annika Dean. "They are so lucky."

It was unbelievable -- a hit-and-run driver knocked a father and son from their motorcycle.

"And this car ran a red light and he smashed into the front of the motorcycle," said 8-year-old Alex Doyle. "And then the next thing I knew we were on the ground just laying there."

Their helmets saved their lives, though Alex's father was knocked senseless and can't remember anything.

We reported the exclusive story from the Lakewood intersection last week. This case went unsolved for days, but after our story aired, the suspect's girlfriend became alarmed. She tried to get him to give himself up. When he didn't, she turned him in.

"We're attributing that to the media attention," said Lt. Bret Farrar of Lakewood Police. "We got a phone call from somebody who was actually in the car who tried to convince the driver to turn himself in, but that wasn't quite working itself out."

When police arrested 19-year-old Jacob Hyneman of Kent, it came out that during a fight with his girlfriend as she pointed to the motorcycle, he intentionally hit it.

"They were fighting and she said: 'Wouldn't that be funny if that was my ex-boyfriend?' " Annika Dean said. "That made him mad and he ran right through the red light and purposefully hit them and took off."

Lt. Farrar says, "He may have an anger management problem and that's probably one of the things the court will discuss."

Hyneman is in jail charged with vehicular assault and failure to stay at the scene of an injury accident.

"It's horrible," Annika Dean said. "It's disgusting to me that somebody would purposefully hit a motorcycle because they were mad. It's disturbing."

She shudders to think what could have happened to Alex and Pat just because police say a jealous boyfriend took his anger out on innocent victims.

I think that happened near Seattle.  I havn't heard anything about it on the news but, then again, I don't really ever watch TV.  But the Lakewood and Kent names are cities that are near each other here in Seattle.

That jerk has alot more than "anger management problems".  That's just psychotic.

GeeP

Little bastard.

Maybe next time his girlfriend will point at a train.

WTF took the little girl 10 days???  She needs to be in jail too.

Anger management??? :x  :?  :x

Simply outrageous. My dad told me when I first started driving
"A car is a weapon. Respect it as such".

In my opinion, this psycho pointed his weapon AND intentionally pulled the trigger. I agree, I see no reason why that doesn't at least constitute a manslaughter charge.

not just intentionally hitting a motorcycle, but intentionally hitting a motorcycle with an 8-yr old on the back.  that's pretty sick.

when i had someone intentionally hit me as a pedestrian, i was given the option of pressing aggravated vehicular assault, which was a pretty hefty charge as i recall.

Dom...that did happen here. It was all over the news. KOMO 4 made a big stink about it like they always do about everything. I think they should have put that idiot on a bike and let a car hit him. See how he likes it.

Phaedrus

Thats insane. Sickening, really.

I've never heard of anyone doing that, but I do know of some people that give motorcycleists a hard time. A buddy of mine had a guy in front of him throwing pennys out his car window at about 60mph..they sure can sting!!!
Richard died in a motorcycle accident that was at no fault of his own.  We lost a good friend and good member of this board.  Though Rich may be gone, his legacy will live on here.

I get so sick of the shameless self-indulgence of news channels. Really, you think that's so important that it needs to be in the first line of your news story??

Anyway, it's awful what people can get away with in cars. We're so over the top obsessed with cars ruling our lives that anyone's afraid to do anything if it infringes on someones desire to drive a car. The fact that people can get 5 DUIs and still have their license, the fact that it's not illegal to talk or text on your phone when you're driving, and the stupid aggressive things that people do non stop just makes me sick. It's doubtful he'll even stay in jail when it's over with.

Unfortunately none of it surprises me. I live in the city, and work 15 blocks from my house at an office with no parking lot, so I just bicycle to work every day. The majority of people just come close to running you over because they don't pay attention, but I definitely get my share of people who will intentionally try to run me off the road because they think I'm in their way, or just because they're in a car and feel like being a bully. Most of the time there's nothing you can do but watch the car drive off. When I used to ride in some more congested areas you'd definitely get some people who didn't think it all the way through, and 20 seconds later they'd get stuck in traffic and end up losing a mirror and have to watch me ride off gracefully through rushhour traffic, but still. It's no where near considered a privilege anymore.

jserio

Getting a license should be much, much harder than it is I believe. I'm not one usually for making new laws, and in this case, I'm not really advocating that either. Just harsher penalties for breaking the laws. A car is a dangerous thing for someone to be out of control of.
