Try dropping down to 4 Oreos and set your pilot screw 3 turns out.

I just bought one of those (the bike, not the nike)!!  Mine is an 81.  Gorgeous.  I love the super sexy kick start.     I'll be scoping ebay for a petcock...not as easy as finding GS parts.

Lots of potential in that bike.

Cross reference the part number on bikebandit, then click on their "what it fits" button. It will bring up every bike that uses the exact same petcock.

very pricey indeed. But there's a great chance that the stock petcock was used on a much larger bike - so you don't have to worry about not getting ENOUGH gas.

So I assume these bike are not freeway friendly being top speed of 57. how can I squeeze more power from this lil engine

like any ICE...intake and exhaust would be a good start

Big Rich

Ya, the usual. Check the timing, spark, valves, compression test, etc.

But the best way to get more "power" from a small bike is to start ditching the excess crap from the factory. If you put that bike on a diet you could probably knock off 50 pounds.

I would like to keep the bike as stock LOOKING as possible but doesnt need stock parts. what could i remove to shed some weight. just removed teh carb today and cleaned it up a bit. still have not fired hwer up yet I will add gas to the float boal and get a new battery and see what happens. are these systems 6v or 12v and can they be swapped to 12v if 6v?

I don't know off the top of my head if they are 6 or 12 volt, but I would guess 12. If a google search doesn't bring anything, pull a bulb out of the headlight or turn signal. If they are "normal" bulbs, then you are good. Biggest problem with converting a bike to 12 volt is the charging system.

A lot of parts can be swapped out for fiberglass (fenders, headlight, seat, even the tank but I wouldn't recommend that one). Lose the grab rail and passenger pegs- you don't plan on riding 2 up, right? The mufflers could probably be replaced with much smaller ones. Aluminum wheels, smaller instrument cluster.........it becomes an addiction.

yama, Big Rich: thanks for the tips on searching for/buying parts- good information!

The 79 is a 6 volt, I believe.  I think 81 is the first year it went to 12.  I read that the swap to 12 volt has been done before on these bikes, but I don't know anything about the process.

I bought this bike to ride the Lake Erie Loop Race come spring- to qualify, you need a bike of 225cc's or less!  mach1- keep me updated on your progress!

 :laugh:I have no idea why Honda did that- I had a 68 CL175 that was a 12 volt system, and a 74 st90 (I think)  that was 6 volt.

Either way, all you would have to do is find a stator, coils, lights, and maybe regulator/ rectifier to convert a bike to 12v.

Lake Erie loop, huh? The guy that I sold my 175 to wants to try that too.

I will 6v is kinda low looks like riding at night will be a hassle. this thing is mainly for getting to and from work will good gas milage and maybe going for a ride with the pops(ho dont go that fast) so mostly day riding.  first thing I need is beffier shocks for the rear and spacing out the front fork so they are a littliffer these are worse than my GS was.
