Just put on her "new" 2006 tank, swapped out the rotors and pads, now I just have to figure out what I need to do to my ugly, faded front fender to clean it up so the whole bike looks new.

Checked the water and I could see dry plates, so refilled it with water and back on the trickle charger.

You filled it with distilled water right?

If I was going to keep this battery for longer than 24 hours I would have, but it was 6pm, nothing was open and I needed my bike to run.  I gave it all the goodness of Sydney tap water, chlorine, fluoride, with some nice metalic flavours from my house's own pipes for that coppery taste.  In hindsight even bottled water would have been better, although that's got a good hit of trace elements in it too.  I suppose I could have left a bucket out in the rain.

Oh okay haha I didn't know you weren't going to keep the battery...and I'll agree: the bucket out in the rain would be the safest way to go

Washed.
Removed the "idiot" stickers.
Started removing the decals (just the ones near the indicators so far, ran out of Eucalyptus Oil to remove the sticky residue).
Put on a tank protector.
Waxed the nose, tank & top box.

She's feeling the love today.
Have you tried the hairdryer trick?

Yes. Works fairly well.  :D

Used to use clean drinking rain water for all our batteries when I was a kid, used to always get 4-6 years out of them.
Good substitute for the Distilled stuff.

BTW - Sydney tap water is good! :)   Ever drunk Adelaide tap water?!!   :icon_sad:

My bike is currently being mildly cycloned on, so no TLC or riding for a few days. :(
I like a non-sequitur as much as the next Giraffe.

Very nice...and your bike is new again...only 0.3km (or is it miles?)

Sure is a nice way to modernize the look from the cockpit...

Later.

Well despite refilling the battery and having it on the trickle charger overnight, the old battery still wouldn't hold a charge.  It didn't make it through my test, which is probably the worst day it could have died.

So the next day I bought myself a new battery, and while they were charging it up for me I went and addressed some of the issues with the wiring.

Underneath all the electrical tape was this, which is not actually the correct battery.  You'll notice it's in back to front.

Now this gave the previous owner two problems  One is that the terminals are almost touching  the tank, and they had to be kept wrapped in tape or they'd short out.  It presented a pretty serious fire hazard in a crash if there was leaking fuel involved.

The second issue is that the cables had to be extended.  Peeling back the tape I was pleased to find the original negative terminal with a usuable connection.

The positive terminal wasn't so good, it was just a wire poked back into it's connector then taped up, which was then bolted to the extension.  That can't have been helping matters with my electrics.

With the new battery in, I just got rid of the old positive lead and used one of the extensions.  I still had the insulating boot for the starter relay end, so that got reused.

I hacked up an old spark lead and used the end to insulate my positive terminal, my bike feels much less like an electrical fire waiting to happen.  I'm going to get some red and black heat shrink tomorrow to make the wiring look a bit smarter.  I also need to make a hold down bracket for this battery, which is only held in place by the seat.  I'll daisy chain some zip ties together for today.

wow, it's crazy how ghetto some people are when it comes to fixing bikes. This is how my Ninjette was. I was finding problems almost everyday. Glad to hear you got everything situated, hopefully you can retake that test now and not have to worry about your bike crapping out on you.

Twisted

Well the old girl clicked over 45,000kms today so I dropped the oil and gave her a fresh batch. Amazing much better a GS clicks into gear with fresh oil.

I got a bit over zealous topping her up and I over filled her just a touch above the full line. Does anyone know if this will matter to much?

Toogoofy317

Hmmm, not to sure but can't you use a turkey baster to get the extra out to be on the safe side.

Flick got a bath today. Out of the hospital yesterday and washing 'ole boy today LOL! I could tell he missed me and the little jealous streak. There was a Ducati that seemed to be having some problems so I banged a "u" turn to see if he needed some assistance as soon as I pulled up next to the ducati Flick sputters coughs then dies. I have got to have the most jealous bike in the country. I pull over to look at a Gold wing for a friend once and the battery absolutly kraps out there. One month out of warranty help my roomie on his gixxer he starts pissing oil. Really WTF is he going to do if I ever really do "look" at another bike Blow up?!?!?

Well, it wasn't today, but is is the most recent addition to the bike.  I finally added an air-filter (and intake that serves as an air box).
