Somebody with an 09 look at your axle please

I got a fleabay axle off of an 09 that looks good except that the nut is different than my old one and there's no cotter pin.

Could somebody with an 09 look down and see if their axle looks like this, or if I've got something random that I ought not run.

Also, if that's the way to roll any thoughts on keeping it together without a cotter pin beyond locktite?

No pin on my '09. We all think that's odd, but that's the way they do it.
The nut is one of those compression types that go on really tight, not the cap nut you show.

The manuals refer to two types of nut, self locking "Nylock" types and castellated nuts with split (or cotter) pins. The application of which was dependent on the relevant construction/usage laws prevailing in the country in which the bike was originally sold. At one time Euro bikes got the nylocks and USA bikes got the castellated nuts and pins......but things may have changed.

What you have is a dome nut, they have two purposes, 1....They prevent fluid or gas leaking out through the thread....2   They look pretty!.....but they are NOT locking.  I doubt it is a standard fitment in any market and I certainly wouldn't want it holding my front/rear wheel on!! In fact the axle-bolt itself looks suspicious in that the threaded section steps down in diameter and has a course thread. Every GS5 axle-bolt I have seen front and rear, has had a single diameter along its total  length and I am almost certain, a fine thread......but again things may have changed.

Check the axle-bolt you have bought is exactly the same as the one fitted to your bike. If it is junk the dome nut and get the same size nylock from a hardware store.

The axle bolt matches my 04's. The lack of a castellated nut and pin is what threw me for a loop. Looks like I'm looking for another nut though. Thanks.

#4
Assorted axles from my parts box (couple are front axles):

Current nut is a self locking, but not the nylock type. It is the kind that is a little squished on one end rather than having the nylon insert (I don't recall what they're called). By the parts diagram, they eliminated the cotter pin in 2009 (K9 model). They still show it for the K7 and K8 models and earlier.

The part number for the rear axle changed in 2000 from 64711.01d00 to 64711.01d20. Not sure what the difference is. They don't list a number for 2009 axle, at least where I looked. I haven't removed my 2009 wheel yet. They do list the same part number for 2000-2008. Clearly one axle is labeled "GS500F 2004" and is not the same as your axle. Since wheels and bearings are the same, I am puzzled about the difference in your axle unless your rear end has been changed out.

The bearing and spacer part numbers all appear to be the same from 1989 to present which would indicate the axle is the same diameter and same length.

I agree that what you have does not appear to be a correct GS500 axle and nut. Something's not right.

Mine is an 07 and it has the castle nut with a cotter pin.

My '09 has a nut on the front axle identical to the one you have posted.

What if some noob didn't tighten it enough? Whats to stop it from completely falling off then?

Noticed my '09 has cap nut on front axle (or call it an acorn nut)
Castle nut or slotted? same difference. 92 and 94 have those, front and rear with cotter pins.
Torque lock nut on rear axle of 2009.
Change in 2009 probably to save 25 cents making the bike. Same reason brake lever is no longer adjustable - save a few cents.
