Okay, so every time I go to fill up I'm always trying to jam the pump thing down in there.  It seems like the gas cap is always getting in the way.  Is there some trick, or is it just shove until it goes in, then rip it out?

I never put the pump in a motorcycle tank, just hold it by the opening and watch for the fuel level to reach the bottom of the filler sleeve.

I hold the nozzle just under the lip to stop it splashing and so I can see when it is near the top when full.

You've gotta be real sensitive and gentle with the tank. Go easy with it til' you're ready to go full blast in it.

Give your GS what she needs without being too rough, this requires eye contact and taking great care with your delicates.

The last thing you need is a big sloppy mess of gasoline when all she wanted was a 4-gallon quickie fill.

I've never put gas myself in my entire life as no stations here is like that, but you are making the same mistake a guy that was filling my bike did, at least here, there is some kind of sensor in the tip of the pump so when gas touches it, it automatically stops filling, this was happening after only 5L was pumped, while at the end 14L got pumped. The guy tried several times with no success to override the system(that he probably didn't even know existed), when finally I, with no actual experience, had to teach the guy who works at a gas station how to use it

But my GS is just too sexy and it is hard to control myself sometimes... I ripped the filler neck one time. She wouldn't let me take her out for two weeks. I had to wait for the rip to be fixed. 

If the end of the filler nozzle is below the neck sleeve, you're too far in.

If you're right handed, support the nozzle with your left hand while squeezing the trigger with your right. This way, you are steady, can see in the tank and are able to Slow/stop the flow as the level reaches the bottom of the neck sleeve.

Remember to fill it up on the sidestand!  If you fill it too close to the top (which you shouldn't) it could overflow and come out the tank overflow when you do park it on the side stand.  It's always fun to watch the fuel you paid for dribbling out onto the pavement   

I fill it on the centrestand, so I can accurately judge how much is is in there, but I still leave a little bit of space at the top and the only time I've ever had gas overflow was when the bike was parked horizontally. 

Having gas spill out the drain is more than just a waste of money.  I know a guy who overfilled his Spada, then went around a roundabout straight out of the gas station, only to find that the drain was covering his rear tyre in slippery fuel and then he wasn't on his bike any more.  The ever bullet proof Spada came through with only a grazed bar end, and there was no harm done to a well geared up rider.

im not sure if it could light up, but gas on the outside of a hot engine doesn't seem like the greatest thing either. I fill mine up on the side stand until the gas has reached the top of the tank on the left side.

I fill on the center stand. Fill until it hits the neck sleeve then slowly take it to the next 50c or $ - so if it's like $15.40 I'll only add another 10c worth of juice. This leaves PLENTY of space to then put the bike on the side stand and not lose any gogo juice.

I never had gas spill out always fill up to the top but usually I fill up then go and Im fine never filled up then parked.

I have always filled up while sitting on the bike, usually fill to just below the filler neck. Never had any issues.

Same here I keep him between my legs! Fill up till it clicks will gently move him side to side and finish off to the next $ always get the same amount in within a couple of miles!

We have signs at our petrol bowsers saying we have to be off the bike when filling it up.

I've read stories of people who overfilled the tank while siting on the bike and got a crotch full of fuel. Not good for the delicate parts! 

I once used a pump nozzle that was missing the spring on the catch that keeps the lever in the on position. I didn't notice that it was keeping the fuel flowing instead of my hand. I let go and the flow kept going! Was not pleased with dowsing my bike!

If your wondering, fuel slopped over a hot engine can ignite.  My dad has old burn scars from sometime in the 60's that he got setting fire to an old rear engine Renault at a gas station.  A shitty design put the hot parts and the fuel filler nice and close together, so a bit of over run from the old school pump (pre cutout) and he found himself on the ground in flames.

You wouldn't want to have the same experience actually sitting on the bike, you can picture how that's going to end.  You want to put yourself where you can step back in a hurry.

I sit on her while she's being filled, and I put the nozzle in only halfway, nice and gentle, and fill her slowly.  That's what she likes.

Hmmmm.... I usually sit on my bike as well but I had not thought of this problem before. I think from here on out I'll leave it on the center stand.

If that happened to me I'd be owning me a gas company as well as suing the state for certifing an unsafe pump! There isn't a warning sign on the pumps for that. I would hope that moto pants would give me a moment or two to stop drop and roll or grab the window washer bucket and pour it on me. Besides really anymore Flick is the only one down there any way
