needle jet washers

Where do you get washers to shim the needle jets?  They are very small washers, and I haven't been able to find any that size at big-box stores like home depot or at auto part stores.  How thick should the washer be?

Didn't you buy a pack from me ... I had a problem with them, waiting to get the correct ones, I'll send you some in a few days ... problem with not owning a 04+ ... worked on em plenty, and had the right set of washers in the first set I had, replacement ones with the same part number turned out to be too small.

Hey Buddha,
Yeah, I have one of your jet kits.  Just installed the new jets last weekend, worked great!  I figured I'd shim the needles up 1 washer while I had the carbs apart, but the washers in the kit were too wide.  The washers fit into the hole that the needle jet feeds into at the top of the vacuum slides, but at the very bottom of the slide, the hole narrows, and the washers are too wide to make it all the way to the bottom, causing the needles to be shimmed more than desired.  I have a '98.  I mainly bought the kit for the jets, so I wasn't gonna bother you about the washers, but if you have narrower washers, I'd be interested.

Bumping an old thread.


What size washers should I get?  I recently rejetted and added a v&h/lunchbox combo and I think I'm running lean around 1/4 throttle.  I had issues at first with 1/8-1/4 throttle and it turned out the idle screws on both carbs were backed all the way out.  I set them to about 3 - 4 turns out each and that fixed the problem starting from rest.  Now its bogging around 1/4 throttle and after some research I think its because the float isn't letting in enough fuel so I want to add some washers to the needle. 

I've seen posts that mention a #4 washer, but home depot didn't have it and without other measurements I'm kinda of lost.

I have since gone to O rings cos the washers for em are non existent. Some are being mailed to you in a few hours, but its a regular 1/4 X 1/8 X 1/16 wall O ring.
Heck you could punch out a plastic sheet (like a soda bottle wall) with a paper punch and put a small hole in the middle of it wiht a needle, then put the carb needle through and open that hole and use it. Anyway O rings coming along wiht the right screws for the O piece.

Just got your kit in today Buddah....the little o-rings in there are what I use for the washer???

Need to get yourself to a good hardware store.  I feel sorry for folks who only have a Home Cheapo or Lowes to go to.  What you want are either M3 (3mm, metric) or #4 (SAE) stainless washers.  Exact thickness isn't terribly important, they're all pretty much the same and I've ended up using 2-3 for each application.  But feel free to break out the micrometer if you really want.  Just make sure they're not too wide and keep the needle from resting all the way at the bottom of the slide.

Thanks for the help. 

I just pulled my carbs off today again to switch out my mid jets and back them down to stock.  I recently upgraded to a K&N and V&H with a rejet but it has got a nasty lean spot at about 1/4 throttle.   I'm going to be shimming the needles soon but when I pulled them off today to see them they wouldn't come out.

The should fall right out when I turn them upside down.  But they don't and even with a little pressure they still wouldn't slide down.  I don't want to break anything so I came to "teh forumz"





Both needles are sticking so I'm assuming its something I'm doing wrong.

EDIT:  quick update, got the needles out.  I think someone was in here before because I found a washer in each needle but they were above the C-clip.  There was a spring seated above the needle with a plastic top, I'm assuming this is standard on the 02' models+ because all the walk through posts I've found have the needles looking different. 


Should I put the washer in between the C-clip and plastic doughnut?  Would that have been the reason the needle was sticking before?
