If I were you, I would *not* buy a used CCT from another GS500... I'd go to your local deal, and buy the updated part. The GS500 CCT has been through something like 4 revisions since the original 89 engine.

You definitely don't want a used cam chain tensioner.

It's like buying a used head gasket. Not a good idea at all.

Go buy a new one bub.

It's nothing like buying a used head gasket. and there's nothing wrong with putting one from a differs t bike on. I already got one from someone else and nothing is wrong with it.

Pretty sure Burning1 would know.. Probably a good idea to listen to him. He rides his GS way harder than 90% of this forum, if not more.

Hey, if it works it works. But I liken it to running race takeoffs - sure it's a hell of a lot cheaper than new tires, but they aren't going to last as long as a fresh part, and you're limited to buying what's available.

I put used CCT's on all the time, kawasaki's go through them ... I take em off and re wind the spring and on a GS you can anchor it with a piece of wire. Works great. However I aint buying no used head gasket.

sometime you can actually wind up the spring and just kink your screwdriver a tiny bit, and then once you bolt you bolt it on just tap the housing a little and it will pop out of the kink.

No offense to him, i agree with most of what he says on here, but Im a mechanic too, even won 2 gold medals for a missouri state competition for moto mechanics, and there is really no problem with using a used cam chain tensioner assuming it was working fine on the previous bike.

No offense taken. Personally, I don't like dealing with CCTs, and I know it's a weak point on a lot of engines. I figure, if I'm going to swap it, might as well buy the most updated part.

He bought the used CCT from me and I pulled it from a VERY low mileage motor. I took it apart and completely checked it out to make sure it is still good. I hate having to deal with returns or chargebacks... so i'm 100% upfront about the condition and age of the parts I sell. Hopefully this info will put the issue to rest.
