Float Height Question and Trip To France Prep

Hi all, I'm taking the GS (1992 GS500E) to France (from England) on the weekend for the MotoGP so I took it out of the garage for the first time in months and started getting it ready.

Had to clean the fuel tank from the previous owner and while I was there thought I would change out the tank petcock/filter and the normal petcock from an 08 bike. Swapped the air filter for a lunchbox so the newer petcock would fit and rejetted to 40/140/2.5turns. Cleaned the carbs while I was there with new carb kits so seals/o-rings etc and did the float height as best I could.

For the first time in a long time the bike started up first time great and was actually idling on its own nicely once it was warm with choke off. Took it for a spin and it ran suprisingly well but was very boggy low down in the revs until about 5k then it would pull nicely. Checked the float height when I got back using the clear pipe on the drain screw method and both floats were higher than the recommended gasket level. I'd say one was round 1.5cm out and th other about 0.7-1cm out. Thing is I was so sure I had them spot on when I had them apart yet they are so far off. Would this cause the low revs bogging I'm experiencing or would that be something else?? Will readjust when I get a chance before Thursday when I leave unless you guys dont think it will make a massive difference.

Apart from that I was pretty happy. The chain was showing a bit of rust inbetween links so I cleaned and lubed that hell out of it. The fork seals were leaking a little bit but nothing major and I'm sure they will be fine till I get back. Engine oil and filter were changed before christmas and the bike hasnt left the garage since then. Anything else you guys think I should be checking for the 800mile round trip???

The float adjustment as detailed in the manual didn't work for me either. If you have socket head cap screws on the float bowls you can remove the bowls with the carbs on the bike, tweak the float tang, remount the bowls, recheck.

I had one carb 4mm high and noticed a little difference, so I think your 1cm+ is definitely causing some trouble.

Thanks Paul, redid the heights yesterday and the bike is much better sub 5k revs!

Just gutted that my progressive springs and oil didn't arrive in time for tomorrow!
