How do I remove the stock footpegs?

I just got the GSXR footpegs and have them grinded down to fit as explained in the wiki. But I'm having trouble getting the stock pegs off the bike. Should I be able to remove just the pegs, or do I need to remove the rearset that they're attached to? The bolt that attaches the peg isn't threaded, it's held on by some kind of washer that I'm having trouble accessing (which is why I'm wondering if I need to remove the intire part that that peg is attached to first). I'd appreciate any tips from anyone who has experience modding the pegs.

The pin that holds the footpeg has a circlip on the other end of it.  You ideally want a fairly fine pair if circlip pliers, although I have popped that style of clip with screwdrivers and the like before.

Thanks Cosimo. I should have looked back at the wiki before asking, I see now it says you need needle-nose pliers to remove the clip.

Hopefully you're luckier than I was. I bought the GSXR pegs, ground off the hump, went out there and both of the pins that go through my pegs are bent at the tip at like a 30-40 degree angle. So I still haven't been able to get to old one's off. Tried straightening them with a prybar but all that did was scratch the plate next to the pegs :(

Grind off the end and remove them. Then use a bolt when you put them back on or just buy the pin at your local dealer for a buck or so.
Or you can get new plates. Pretty cheap to get used ones - especially since a lot of people have changed them to gsxr ones or put on Raask or other rear sets.

I did get lucky with this mod--just took my first ride with the new pegs--proud to say my first motorcycle mod ended in success  :)

Do you know why your pins are bent? Has the bike ever been down? One of my pins actually was bent, but probably not at quite the 30-40 degree angle you describe. It was hell getting it out, I had to use a hammer and pound on the end of it, but eventually it budged. You might want to try a hammer. I think mine was bent from when I crashed a couple months ago, riding downhill on a twisty road in the rain--not a good idea when you've only been riding for a couple weeks   :nono: Glad I went with a used GS for my first bike rather than plunking down $5000 for a new one  :icon_mrgreen:

just to add to this thread, i also just purchased the gsxr 600 pegs.  Would any of you know if its possible to put sv650 clutch and brake levers on a gs? specifically this one?

Those are pretty fugley, but the brake lever will fit. Clutch - no. Only one I found is the LSL lever for about $120 each. To replace the clutch lever with a really good one, you must replace the perch. Honda S4 works with a custom cable, as I've done on Suzi. Custom cable is $40. For that you use ASV levers at about $125 each.

You can get those fugley levers for the GS500 if you look. Plain black or silver looks much better. Remember you need a deep slot for the newer type clutch switch. Got a box full of clutch perches and levers I've experimented with. SV650 perch and lever work but usually need a custom cable because of the shallow angle of the GS00 cable. Needs 90 degrees to clear the instruments, not the stock 45 degrees. Remember - for a non-GS500 lever you have to change the perch.

Here are fugley ones for GS500:

They are not really carbon. Just painted to look like carbon and a poor job of it. Slightest bend or nick and it peals off.

You can buy a GS500 in black.
As for fugley,  :dunno_black: that is just my opinion. I did buy a set of them when I first got Suzi. They looked out of place, didn't stay on very long and have been sent to recycling. They weren't real carbon fiber - just printing that imitated the carbon look (sort of). If you like them, that's OK. Then I bought black and learned all about the depth of the slot for the switch (after smashing and breaking the switch on my 2009). 1989 was factory black, then they went silver. By the way, all brake levers for all years are compatible. No issue there.

GENERAL ADVICE FOR ANYONE SWITCHING CLUTCH LEVERS
Newer clutch levers with deeper slot will work on older bikes, just not the other way around without modification.
Companies sell GS500 lever sets in assorted colors. So buy what you want. Just be aware you don't have to look for alternate listings unless you can't find specifically GS500 listed items. Many ebay ads use a generic picture and they state "PLEASE NOTE: LEVERS SUPPLIED MAY DIFFER FROM THE PICTURE (WE USE A GENERAL PHOTO FOR ALL OUR LISTINGS) WE WILL SUPPLY THE CORRECT LEVERS FOR THE MODELS LISTED - IF YOU ARE UNSURE IF THEY WILL FIT PLEASE E-MAIL BEFORE PURCHASING"

Do be aware that the clutch switch changed somewhere around 2003 and the pin on the switch is longer. Some clutch levers don't have a deep enough slot for the newer single switch unit. Compare it with the one you take off and the type of switch you have.

You choices are one of the following if you have the newer switch (as on all "F" models, but the perch is exactly the same, just a change in the switch and connector)
* Insure that they state for a newer GS500F if your bike has the single switch module (as opposed to a PC board and a separate wiper assembly that falls out and you lost the parts on the garage floor)
* Disable the clutch switch
* Shorten the pin on the modular switch so it won't get smashed and broken
* (best suggestion) Use a dremel cutting bit either on a dremel or a drill press (which I found more accurate and stable) to slightly deepen the slot for the lever on the switch.

Some levers have been powder coated or painted. That makes the part that goes into the perch a little thick and tight, so you may have to use a flat file to remove the paint from that area. Its ok as it doesn't show.

Grease it when installing it.

And remember: remove the switch FIRST or you'll break it when removing the lever (unlike the SV650 perch which uses the same switch but the lever can be removed without removing the switch, but lever is not compatible.)

I've got a box full of clutch levers and assorted perches so I'm just giving suggestions from experience in trying to find high quality adjustable clutch levers for the GS500. (The LSL brake and clutch levers are on their way from Germany! Expensive, but should be a nice direct replacement. That makes the levers cost 1/4 what I paid for the bike. Call me crazy  :cookoo: )
